Another Mill St wonder! Todays contestant is Tankhouse Ale.
So here's how I'm gonna lay this down.
I find that sometimes with a specific niche of food, people try to outdo each other by amplifying what the most general part of that food is, like with hot sauces, it's always about who's sauce is hotter, what can scorch the tongue more.
But what about the flavor? I'd rather for a hotsauce that not only brings the heat, but makes my food taste amazing at the same time.
This has been an issue with craft beers in my opinion, there seems to be this big deal about who can make a beer that's hoppier, who uses more hops and from what I've seen, there's a smaller number of people who prefer a beer that's extremely hoppy (lookin at you Boneshaker).
While in my absense I've tried a number of hoppy beers such as Rhyme and Reason, or Flying Monkey. If you're a hop junkie and want a really bitter beer, go for em. If you're looking for a new flavour, then give Tankhouse a try.
It's hoppy, yes, but it's nowhere near being an overload. Tankhouse had delightful balance of hoppiness mixed with spiciness which reminds me of Old Jamaica ginger beer, which let me tell you is the bees knees. The combination of the two flavours leaves me tongue incredibly satisfied, but the taste instantly dissipates leaving me wanting more. One that note let me also put a note in that more of the Craft Beers I tried would leave a long lsting aftertaste, mostly being bitter, which progressively enhances (right wording?) the bitter hoppiness of the flavour with each sip. Tankhouse seems to be everything I could ask for in a hoppy beer.
The design is alot like the taste actually, it's modest, not trying to be anything crazy or super attractive, it's the Organic of hoppy beers, simple effective, and fun.
Good job on this one Mill St, it's a winner for sure!
Nightmare on Mill Street Pumpkin Ale - Mill St. Brewery, 5% ABV - 355ml, (Toronto, ON, Canada)
On the back label:
"Our Pumpkin Ale is brewed with traditional spices to create a simply delicious beer with subtle flavours and the creaminess of pure vanilla. Based on our Brewmaster's wife's pumpkin pie recipe. (we can't make this stuff up!) Beware...it will soon be gone without a trace."
Ingredients: water, malted barley, malted wheat, flaked wheat, pumpkin puree, spices, hops, vanilla extract.
Style: (seasonal) Pumpkin Wheat Ale
My Rating: C+
Taste Profile: Ginger/malts -> cinnamon/nutmeg/vanilla -> rough/dry finish.
Where I got it: BC Liquor Stores
How much: $12/6pack, Fall 2012
Do I love this enough to drink it again: no
Would I recommend this to beer aficionados: no
Tasting notes: pours clear bottle brown, almost no head nor retention, just a thin ring, a few countable slow streams. Malted pumpkin and cinnamon/nutmeg on the nose. Drinks with a light roasted almost salty ginger up front, medium malts, 6/10-tame sweetness, body thins out in the mids, spices kick in - cinnamon, nutmeg, finishing crisp, partially hopped dry and roughish mildly bitter. Low-medium complexity, low-med depth, okay transitions, flat carry, okay drinkability.
2nd Tasting (Nov.30/2012): interesting aromatic nutmeg on the nose. Body, length and flavour still fall short. C+.
Oktoberfest Beer - Mill St. Brewery, 5.6% ABV - 355ml, (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

Tasting notes: pours clear golden orange with a small head, thin layer of retention, foamy CO2, lots of active streams. Some sweet malts on the nose. Starts off with a gentle 7/10-sweet barley/grain up front, mild citrus, lightly metallic, nice creaminess, finishing mildly hopped bitter. Low-medium complexity, low-medium depth, good transitions, okay carry, decent drinkability. A bit above average.
