thinking about them
scooby doo, 2002 (dir. raja gosnell)
Ladybug Swarm in the late 90s / early 2000s
I was just thinking about how when I was a kid growing up in Connecticut, there were like three summers in a row where ladybugs covered our entire house. All the windows. The doors. They came in through the cracks somehow and crawled on the ceilings and died on the floors. I went from loving ladybugs to being kind of afraid of them. I think it was around 1996 - 2002 or something?
I don’t think anyone I know has ever remembered this and it feels like I’m going crazy. That can’t have been something that was just surrounding my house in particular. Does anyone else remember this?
My Own Style analysis: Euphoria
Four girls in one bedroom, all very beautiful (and played by actresses whose talent matches their beauty) and all categorized.
The “Beauty Queens” and the “Sex Kittens”, the ones who got the most attention and admiration for their looks are both in pastel colors and showcasing their midriffs and cleavage and shoulders. Their names are Cassie and Maddy.
Then there are the “Mousy” ones who don’t look mousy by any sense of the word and are just as beautiful as the ones in pastel. These two girls are in dark colors and patterns and are more modest while showcasing their figures; they are also clad in ways that make them stick out from the group, as if there is a disconnect.
Lexi, the one in plaid is the only one in a skirt and a blouse that take care to showcase her model slender figure and is in reds that tie her to sister Cassie. She doesn’t feel she ever would fit into this group or get the attention her mother gives to her sister and despite a clear sense of style (throwbacks to Courtney Gripling and Quinn Morgendorrfer and Meadow Soprano and Kate Sanders).
There is one who sticks out the most and that is Kat, all in dark colors and not wearing colors (except I forget if those slippers were part of the costume) that tie her to the group. She’s the most insecure, the largest of the girls, and has a secret life that the other girls aren’t aware of. She clearly is up to something and as obvious as her animal print top that while showcasing her cleavage and arms, is the most covered up of the girls. The dark colors meant to slim her down but also reveal that she has a lot going on...femme fatale colors and patterning on a surburban teenage girl.
Also three of these girls are wearing white footwear.
So, spoiler, the answer to tonight’s Final Jeopardy (category: ‘90s No. 1 Songs) was the Macarena. Only one of the three got it.
But I did. Because I have a visceral memory of having to learn that dance in 6th grade gym class.
Hey, y’all remember smoking and nonsmoking sections inside restaurants?
You’re welcome, Gen Z.
