You have to give X a break because it was the first FF with voices, so they were still figuring shit out. I grew up with it so I’m used to it. It’s really really worth playing.

That’s understandable, but my ears are kind of sensitive in that there some sounds/voices that are either extremely grating or difficult for me to listen to. I mean, FFX’s voice acting is not to this level, but for example, Kricketune’s cry in Pokémon actually makes me nauseous to the point of retching. The second I see its silhouette I have to jam the volume down because I cannot listen to it without nearly puking. It’s yet another reason why I dislike the fourth gen Pokémon games, because that sick sounding fucker was everywhere.

FFX’s voice acting is not to that level of abhorrence, again, but it still bothers me a lot, and I can’t take the game seriously when I’m cringing at the voices every few seconds. It’s why I could never play the .hack games. I started to, but the voice acting was garbage and the syncing was absolutely terrible, so in the end I gave up before I got very far at all, because I was so distracted by how terrible it was. Similarly, Baten Kaitos. I was super excited to play it, but the voice acting wasn’t great right off the bat, and there was that excruciatingly aggravating aspect of it where there was a blip of silence every time the spirit’s name was said because the player could choose the name themselves. I lasted about ten minutes max before I said “fuck this noise” and never picked it up again.

It’s not to say that the games themselves are bad, but voice acting can make or break something for me and in these cases . . . it broke it.

I would recommend IX because it's my favorite, but play X if you haven't yet. I feel like it's a good one to get into the series and the story is fuckin gr8. It's Japan's fav. I also think you'd really like IV. There's a DS remake that's pretty good. I JUST LOVE FF CRIES

I cannot play X because I cannot tolerate the voice acting. =/ My roommate freshman year played it in our dorm room and the voice acting was so terrible I couldn’t stand it orz. Maybe it would be better with Japanese voices, I don’t know, but at least as far as the English cast goes I had to jam headphones on every time because it bothered me so much.

A good friend of mine really loved IV though … I got too frustrated with III and gave it up, so maybe IV would be better.

I’m guessing you are going to recommend IX. The good news is I actually own this one after downloading it from PSN years ago. The bad news is I only got about maybe … ten minutes in before I put it down again. (Uh, last I remember, we fled the capital, and ended up in a forest, and, uh … that’s … that’s where I left off. x_x; )

I LOVED IT.

I think my favorite part was probably Bill!Dipper confronting Mabel once she grabbed the Journal out of the cake, and Mabel gasping, “Bill!Dipper!” before her eyes narrowed and she said in a low voice, “Bipper.” Just, the serious delivery of that ridiculous sounding word/name had me dying. Bill!Dipper is Bipper forever now, thanks. (Unless that’s the ship name, in which case … no thanks.)

I also love Bill now, for real. I mean canon!Bill–I don’t know what fandom does with him, I’m staying out of tags and things until I’m caught up because I’ve been spoiled enough already. But I love that Bill is basically the Devil, or at least a high ranking demon if not the Devil himself, and yet he’s so glib about everything he does. Yes, he loses his temper and goes from 0 to 100 real quick when he does, but otherwise he spends his time engaging in mockery, laughter, and faux affability; he cracks jokes and uses physical humor that of course is pretty macabre, but he acts so bright about it all the time (despite being fully aware of how much it frightens the humans around him and delighting in that fact). I love villains like that. Absolutely love them.

But I think my favorite part about how Bill acts–well, okay, there are two parts. The first is when he finally coerces Dipper into making that deal. To begin with, he coerces him; he recognizes what Dipper is feeling (exhaustion, desperation, and latent resentment toward Mabel not helping him) and capitalizes on that. He literally pulls the “Devil whispering in your ear” trick, and can even summon Dipper’s own memories to use against him. We see here that Bill is not only evil in the sense that he makes things happen/stalks people, but that he really can see into your soul and use your own memories, thoughts, and feelings against you. He’s not just an external harmful force, but an internal one. The fact that he can so easily jump into minds is frightening enough for the protagonists, but the fact that he doesn’t even need that to pull out memories to use for his own purposes makes him that much more dangerous. The way he does it is great as well, because he has a subtle approach; he points out what it is he wants Dipper to see (“All those times you’ve sacrificed for Mabel, and what has she given you in return, hm?”), but he phrases it in such a way that steers Dipper toward the conclusion Bill wants him to reach. He doesn’t tell Dipper what to feel, he just guides him to the feelings that are most useful for Bill. He tries to do the same thing with Mabel later, except he gets a bit cocky and makes a remark about who would sacrifice something they really want “for their stupid sibling,” and that’s the wrong thing to say, because instead of steering Mabel into agreement (which he thought he didn’t need to do because she was already in the process of handing the Journal over), he steers her away from it because she realizes, “Dipper would.”

That’s the first part, but the second is when Bipper and Mabel are fighting, and Mabel gloats that she knows all of Dipper’s weak points and starts tickling him, and Bill starts freaking out because his human body is breaking down (because of Dipper’s sleep deprivation and Bill’s own stupid tendency to torment his meat suit for funsies). Seeing Bill lose emotional control like that when he’s so used to steering the situation is delightful to me, though I think part of the reason might be because of the voice acting. I love his voice. Alex Hirsch does a very good job with him.

All in all, I think the only disappointing thing to me was that Grunkle Stan didn’t realize/find out at any point about the fact that Bill possessed Dipper, and thus never realized/found out that Dipper agreed (however stupidly due to his genre blindness) to the possession … because I feel like Grunkle Stan has to know about Bill, given that he knows about everything else, and given that he made Dipper swear to stop chasing mysteries, I feel like he’d have some choice words concerning the subject of Dipper agreeing to let the Devil/archdemon possess him. :P But the episode was still completely delightful, oh my god. I loved it. <3

I know about that, and I’m not looking forward to that, either. I mean it when I say I really don’t want romance in this show, haha. I don’t think it needs romance pretty much at all and I’m here for the family interactions. (Hence why I love Wendy being a Cool Big Sis to Dipper and Mabel, but I sigh every time Dipper gets the dokis over Wendy.) I’ve heard Dipper/Pacifica is just in one episode, though, so maybe it won’t be too bad.

Haha, that is good to hear. I don’t mind him so much per se, but he’s angry and looks like a scene kid, and he’s voiced by TJ Miller, so . . . Angry Emo Tuffnut. I mean, I’m sorry, but after two movies, a handful of shorts, and 2.5 seasons of a TV show, TJ Miller will forever be Tuffnut Thorston to me. He’s not escaping this. He voices Robbie in Gravity Falls? Scene Kid Tuffnut. He voices Fred in Big Hero 6? Rich Nerd Tuffnut. Doesn’t help that the voice is the same across all media. He is Tuffnut forever, end of, sorry, bruh. :P But I am glad to hear that Angry Emo Tuffnut Robbie gets better, because I’ll admit he’s not my favorite at the moment, haha.
