At my kindergarten graduation, we all had to say what we wanted to be when we grow up. I proudly walk up to podium, ready to tell the world my truth. "MY NAME IS COURTNEY CAMILLE YAMAMOTO & WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE A JUDGE & A LAKER GIRL!!!" I said, face dead serious... the crowd burst out laughing, literally I had parents crying laughing, rollin. I remember when the graduation was over, parents were coming up to me saying, "you betta Go Girl, i hear u, u can be allllat! Whatever u wanna be!" (Well that's my translation of what they said, it was lots of ebonics & 80s/90s cultural slang phrases used that i dont feel like recapping lol). During the Black History Month programs, I would be breaking my back doing those African dances! 😂 My principle, Mrs. Wilder used to say in between acts, "Man that Courtney Yamamoto sure is something!" We as parents, family, friends and a cultured community, as a whole, need to set the example and inspire our young men and women that they are to be love and respected and treat others with such.
