Musical Monday

Hello and welcome to this, the final Monday of February. This week’s musical highlight takes us to the year of the 2010 Tony Awards! We are now in the decade which I will begin my annual venture the Theatre Mecca in search of Broadway fulfillment. This week’s highlight is one I have seen just once, unfortunately not on Broadway, but fortunately with a stellar cast of actor-singer-musicians. Let’s rock n’roll through this week’s Musical Monday highlight!

Musical: Million Dollar Quartet

Book and Arrangements: Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux, and Chuck Mead

Broadway Run: April 11, 2010 - June 12, 2011

Awards Won: Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Levi Kreis).

Other: In addition to Best Musical, and its win for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Million Dollar Quartet was nominated for Best Book of a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical Revue.

Fun Fact: The four actors portraying the famous titular quartet all made their Broadway debuts; Levi Kreis (Jerry Lee Lewis), Eddie Clendening (Elvis Presley), Lance Guest (Johnny Cash), and Rob Lyons (Carl Perkins). Rounding out the cast were Broadway big names Hunter Foster (Sam Phillips) and Elizabeth Stanley (Dyanne). 

When I saw Million Dollar Quartet at Palo Alto Players a few years ago, I was not just enthralled with the book and music, but wildly entertained by the arrangements and performance by the solid cast. This is a musical that is a step above jukebox in that it’s more than just an evening of highlights, but a truly touching musical with plenty of story and heart. Do see this show if you ever get the chance!
