Can we talk about Whizzer from falsettos for a second! How at every turn it is implied that he not only endured so much from Marvin but also society! That out of his four parents he is Jason’s favorite not because he lets Jason get away with everything but because he genuinely cares! That he dies before there is a name for his disease! That his parallels with Trina leads to the baller line of “that’s my life, he shared my life” which doesn’t just mean the good loving part of Marvin but the anger and “funny names” that in games I play he like distanced himself all the way that he doesn’t see any of the cast until the baseball game! You’ve gotta die sometime is heartbreaking! His two interpretations on death as either an individual or passion as it all fades to back or as a gentle kind force as it all fades to white is amazing imagery! I very much enjoy this musical. Thank you for your time
Hello! I hope you had a wonderful, if it applies to you, three-day weekend. This week’s Musical Monday highlight takes on a musical that has a cult classic film attached to its legacy. Let’s take a lookie-loo at how it did on Broadway, shall we?
Musical Monday date: 1/21/2020
Musical: Cry-Baby
Book, Music, and Lyrics: Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger, and David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger
Broadway Run: April 24, 2008 - June 22, 2008
Awards Won: Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Choreography (Rob Ashford)/Theatre World Award (Alli Mauzey)
Other: In addition to Best Musical, Cry-Baby received Tony nominations for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre, Best Choreography.
Fun Fact: Cry-Baby’s original Broadway cast featured theatre-royalty names such as Harriet Harris (Mrs. Vernon-Williams), Jamesy Snyder (Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker), Alli Mauzey (Lenora), Chester Gregory II (Dupree), and Elizabeth Stanley (Allison).
Cry-Baby has quite a fun score and it serves theatre audiences well in its stage adaptation. However, since Cry-Baby is rarely done, I suggest you give the cast recording a listen, and then give the film a watch, so you can enjoy all things Cry-Baby. And until next time, go see a show!

#MusicalMonday, This week’s cover was fun! I’m hoping to make this a regular thing if you guys like it. ***Feedback would be great so I know people actually like it! -Aki
((I’ll also be taking requests in my askbox. They don’t have to be musical theatre. They can be ANYTHING))
Remember Amandla Stenburg, our little Rue? Well she and her duo partner (Zander Hawley) have made this super chill track as HoneyWater. This track for me envokes the emotions of finding your soulmate on a tin rooftop at 3am because you both needed to escape the party then needing to find them the next morning to find they’ve flown away already. Or at least that’s what it does for me. The mix of longing and hope in it’s acoustic melodies provide such a calming effect on my mind. I use it in my quiet hours and on my way to work to help with my anxiety. If I could I would thank them for this beautiful time so much.
Hello and welcome to the start of yet another week! Ringing in the year of 2003, Hairpsray couldn’t stop the beat(ing) and took home a plethora of Tony awards. However, a few musicals still made their mark in the hearts and minds of audiences, critics, and voters. So, this week I highlight one of those non-winners, and look forward to taking a peek at this not-oft-done musical!
Musical Monday date: 7/15/2019
Musical: Amour
Libretto and Music: Didier van Cauwelaert and Michel Legrand
Broadway Run: October 20, 2002 - November 3, 2002
Awards Won: None
Other: In addition to Best Musical, Amour received Tony nominations for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Actor in a Musical (Malcom Gets), Best Actress in a Musical (Melissa Errico)
Fun Fact: At seventeen performances, Amour had the shortest run of any of the nominated musicals, including Best Revival of a Musical.
Amour is a short-lived nugget of Broadway musical history, possibly one you may experience one day, but most likely not. On a completely different note, after this week’s Season Announcement Wednesday, I will be on a two-week hiatus as I venture to the mecca, New York!! I plan on rushing a whole bunch of shows, per usual, and will be enthusiastically writing reviews of this year’s collection of shows I get to see. See you Wednesday; now go listen to, read a, or go see a show!
Tony Awards season is just around the corner! Over the next few weeks, leading up to the ceremony on June 9th, I’ll be giving a little preview of what the Best Musical nominations are. Oklahoma! and Kiss Me, Kate are the two musical revival nominees, both of which have been highlighted on the blog before. With that in mind, here we go with the first two!
