In honor of the many family and friends who worked in the mills, factories, road crews and as laborers and fought for the rights of workers. This song always gets me.
Song Review: James Taylor - “Millworker” (Live, July 18, 1979)
James Taylor is not a blue-collar guy.
Nor is he a woman.
But he put himself right inside the workaday world of a female laborer when he wrote “Millworker” for Flag and subsequently performed the number July 18, 1979, in Ohio. Just freed from the J.T. vault, the video reveals a sparse delivery - just piano accompanying Taylor’s guitar and voice as he sings:
Then it's me and my machine/for the rest of the morning/for the rest of the afternoon/and the rest of my life
Lyrically stunning, “Millworker” has always sounded a tad awkward as the music doesn’t quite fit the vocal melody. Which is why it’s merely a strong deep cut rather than a classic.

Working the carder at work yesterday. Sorting fleece by weight then running it through. This is 100% alpaca and it's buttery soft, like a little grey cloud. 🦙☁️ #imakeyarnforfun #carding #alpaca #millworker #millworkersalwaysworkhard (at I Make Yarn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjpMU3sOuI2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

and i put my entire current music library on shuffle and this came up
I'll ride home in the evening
Staring at my hands
Swearing to my sorrow that a young girl ought to stand a better chance

James Taylor - 2MS - Millworker HQ
From his ninth studio album “Flag” (1979).
Originally written for Broadway musical “Working“.
