For whatever reason, I often find myself seeing movie sequels before seeing the original movie. Here are some examples

Growing up, I’ve watched several fo the Land Before Time Sequels (including The Secret of Saurus Rock, The Stone of Cold Fire, and Journey to Big Water), but have yet to see the original movie.  

I saw the Hunchback of Notre Dame II while they were playing at Sunday school or some other Church event when I was a child and also read book version of the first film when I was child, but I did not get around to seeing the first Hunchback movie (at least not the entirety of it) until I was 18, which was probably for the best. And as long as we’re discussing Disney sequels, I think I also saw saw Milo’s Return before I saw the first Atlantis movie. 

I saw Return of the Jedi (my older brother was watching it on our grandma’s computer) when I was a kid, and I didn’t get around to seeing New Hope and Empire Strikes Back until I was in Middle or High School. 

The first MCU movie I saw was Thor Dark World when it first came out after my dad and brothers asked me if I wanted to go with them to see it and I was all “sure why not. This was my introduction to the MCU. Later my dad took to Avengers: Age of Ultron despite me having not seen the first Avengers movie. Even after I started consistently seeing the MCU movies (including Thor: Ragnorak) when they came to theaters, I still hadn’t gotten around to seeing the earlier MCU movies until leaving the theater after seeing Black Panther (without having seen Civil War) that I realized that I needed to catch up on the earlier MCU movies before Infinity War. Thankfully, I managed to do this. I watched all the phase 1 movies (including Thor after having seen the 2 sequels), then proceeded to watch the phase 2 movies I hadn’t already seen) then Civil War  (the one phase 3 I hadn’t seen in theaters). 

Similar to what happened with Thor: Dark World, my dad asked me if I wanted to go with him and my brothers to see the 2nd Hobbit movie and again I basically responded “sure why not” despite having not seen the 1st Hobbit movie (or the LOTR movies in general, save for parts of it), and I later went with them to see the third Hobbit movie.

Have you ever watched Atlantis: Milo's Return? You know, the three episode pilot turned DTV movie for the cancelled Atlantis series?

Yes! I tried it out one time because I was just in the mood for more Atlantis than I already had, even though I was like, “I KNOW this is gonna suck.”

And while I don’t necessarily call Milo’s Return super-canon or anything, I did NOT actually think it sucked. It was entertaining, the plot threads they introduced were gripping (though obviously meant to lead into a series-wide arc that got canned), there were some cool cultural and mythological nods throughout, and, most importantly, MY HEROES RETURNED. I seriously love the entire ensemble cast of Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and the sequel gave me exactly my fix of wanting more of them. (Especially Vinny Santorini.) It’s not high art by any means, but I do think it’s not the worst Disney sequel out there, and if anyone here loved Atlantis: The Lost Empire, wanted more, but wasn’t sure if they should look at Milo’s Return due to it possibly being stupid, I would encourage you to just go check it out. It’s great fun. Really makes me sad the animated series didn’t get greenlit, though. There was SO much potential there, and I know I just would have EATEN UP a longer exploration of that world, with the team exploring all the cultures Atlantis had touched.

Also, I can’t be the only person who noticed that the first “episode” of Milo’s Return was a Disneyfied “The Shadow Over Innsmouth.”

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and Atlantis 2: Milo’s Return (2003)

A team go on a voyage to rediscover the lost continent of Atlantis where they witness all the strange creatures, technology and power that is down there with them.

 The first one has more drama because it’s an ongoing story whereas the sequel is three separate narratives joined together like episode of a TV series. The characters are introduced rather quickly but they have enough variety to all be interesting in their own ways. The animation is also quite good for the time although it doesn’t do anything innovative.

 For the second film almost the entire voice cast was replaced and I don’t think that they were as well fitted. The fragmented structure of it also makes it seem like it’s in the wrong format because besides being on the surface for all of them they don’t really have much in common. One story is set in the sea, the next in the desert and the last in the snowy mountains and they don’t really mention the fact that characters randomly don’t appear in one or two.

 The treatment of culture is good in both films; there’s a clear allegory for white people destroying civilisations for their own greed. The Atlantean culture is well detailed with its own legends, traditions, clothing and language. Then in the sequel the probe into certain myths regarding the influence of that culture on the Native Americans who underwent a similar fate.

 The humour in the films isn’t presented in the best way. They are both suggested to be serious which makes the comedy parts, even if they are funny, feel oddly out of place. It’s like you can’t be sure if the humour is intended and for that reason it doesn’t come across as very natural. Furthermore, a lot of the stuff in the first one is just crude slapstick comedy which I’m not keen on in general.

 Atlantis; The Lost Empire: 6/10 -Just a cut above average-

 Atlantis 2; Milo’s Return: 4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-

 -The first film ends with one of the flying fish vehicles flying towards the camera. This is identical to the ending of Back to the Future (1985). Both films star Michael J Fox.

-The first story in the sequel involving the Kraken is based on the ‘call of Cthulhu’.

-A lot of the gun and explosion sounds are very similar to the ones used in the Star Wars franchise, including a henchman breathing through a gasmask.

Is it just me, or do you think kida should've kept her outfit from the first movie?? I love the atlantean but I preferred her first outfit for this
