Set aside a day to trek up to Citadelle Laferrière, an abandoned French fortress near the northern village of Milot. Upon reaching the castle (via horseback ride or a manageable hike) travelers are rewarded with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean—on clear days, you can even spot Cuba in the distance.
