Nature Nest: A Club in the Heart of Beypazarı ​

The touristic town Beypazarı stands out with its rich cultural heritage ranging from its historic architectural works, traditional crafts to distinctive cuisine. Due to its traditional houses and historic buildings, the town has been included in unesco world heritage tentative list since 2020. in addition to its built environment, beypazarı is significant due to its nearby natural beauties such as Eğriova plateau and nature park, İnözü Valley, Butterfly Valley Nature Park, Tekke Mountain National Park, Kirmir Stream and Gönen Valley. These natural landscapes unique in geological formations and geographical features are also home to a variety of species, which serve as biodiversity areas and deserve to be further promoted​

In this semester’s final project, students were invited to design a nature club located in the town center of beypazarı that aims to raise awareness and inspire collective action for the preservation of the town’s rich natural heritage. situated within the urban fabric of beypazarı, their project site served as the foundation for a spatial proposal that hosts short-term events, interactive workshops, and public activities. The design should not only attract attention to the ecological values of the region, but also function as a catalyst for environmental consciousness and community engagement. through this project, they are encouraged to explore how architecture and spatial design can contribute to ecological awareness, foster community gathering, and reflect the unique identity of Beypazarı. while this particular place led them to contextualize their design approach, in terms of content, specific needs of a nature club accommodating amateurs, volunteers, locals and visitors helped them develop their design concept and scenario.

çubuk dam fest: promoting local identities

context: The selected site in Çubuk Dam I stands out with its historical and natural values as the first reinforce concrete dam project of the Republic providing water supply and manifesting not only industrialization attempts but also modern modes of leisure in a rural built environment. The students created a spatial organization in the Çubuk-1 Dam Recreation Area; promoting local identity of Çubuk. Their organization included a variety of spaces that host short-term and long-term activities for the practice of festival in revitalization of local culture. While this particular place led them to contextualize their design approach, in terms of content, specific needs of a festival and display and workshop area helped them develop their design concept and scenario. Accordingly, the immediate surroundings, natural, historical, and cultural values, approaches, accesses to the site, movement patterns of present and potential users within the area, and vistas guided their design and arranged spaces together. Likewise, developing a scenario about users, their needs and wants, variety and diversity of spaces and their relations to respond to these requirements aided them organize spaces of differing qualities as a whole.

Site Visit

content: Students designed multiple spaces that accommodated various activities and allowed spatial experiences of both individual and common uses for historical, cultural and agricultural values of Çubuk. In this context, their spatial organization served for permanent (staff, instructors, etc.) and temporary users such as residents of Çubuk District and tourists who could visit the area for various activities (workshops, festivals, exhibitions, gatherings, meetings, and performances) for min 10 max 20 users.

Phase 1 Students are asked to make an organization at least two groups composed of three geometric shapes and more and their repetitions in desired number, which achieves balance, rhythm, harmony and unity by using given systems of organizations. They develop the design using variation, repetition, rotation, growth and intersection both in the groups and the figures within those groups.

Phase 2 Students are asked to create a 3D group by bringing together planar and linear elements and two variations of the group. After this step, working in pairs, they bring together all these six groups to represent contrast.

Phase 3 Students are asked to examine the performance selected among six by listening to the music, noticing the dance and its relation to the music, observing the body movements, and exploring the relationship between them. In light of their analyses, findings, and conceptual work, they create an organization consisting of at least two groups and their variations by using planar and linear elements, which concerns volumetric flow, variations, and the unity of the design.

ULUS HUB: KARŞILAŞMA MEKAN(LAR)I

Öğrencilerden, Ulus’ta karşılaşma(lar) pratiği için çeşitli mekanlar organize olduğu bir hub tasarlamaları bekleniyordu. Bu özel yer, tasarım yaklaşımlarını içerik açısından bağlamsallaştırmalarına yol açtı, “karşılaşma” teması ise tasarım konseptlerini ve senaryolarını geliştirmelerine yardımcı oldu. Bu doğrultuda, Ankara'nın çeşitli yönlerini (kültürel, tarihi, doğal, sosyal vb.) ortaya koyan, kısa süreli etkinliklere ve atölyelere ev sahipliği yapacak bir mekansal organizasyon tasarladılar.

Stage 0: You are expected to make a 35x35x35 cm cube by using 0,5 cm-thick (min. 75 cm long, max. 100 cm) stick and bring it to the studio.

Stage 1: Examine the geometric structure of the 35x35x35 cm cube frame. In this sense, you are expected to explore the geometry and possible sub-volumes of the cube.

Stage 2: Intersect the min. 75cm max.100 cm long and 0.5 cm thick stick with linear elements (stick, balsa and/or wire) with the cube frame that you have previously examined its sub-volumes. The two frames you intersect will form your design base, which includes the geometric reference of your design.

Stage 3: Referring to your design base, develop the 3D reference system that you have defined in Step 2 by using rope and similar linear elements (you can use linear elements as a line or use with a certain frequency to define a plane). This reference system will help you to define volumes of different qualities, volume relationships and integrate them in unity.

Stage 4: In the final stage, you developed your previous work by adding planar elements. Combining planar elements to organize different volume relationships and flows, and you are expected to make a unified design in line with the theme of reconciliation. You should choose planes from materials that are compatible with your design decisions.

- Linear elements in various thicknesses: Rope, elastic rubber cord, wire, fishing line, wood stick, balsa stick, wooden skewer etc.

- Planar elements: Cardboard/ paper/ craft paper/ corrugated cardboard in various thicknesses, thin metal plate, balsa sheet, chicken wire, fly mesh, elastic fabric (stockings etc.), acetate, tracing paper, plastic sheet etc.
