Here's my fangirling over Lucy thinly disguised as analysis.

Lucy stans are really getting fed Huh? This chapter, no this arc is just so amazing for Lucy. I really hope we don't stop here.

Mimi is in my opinion the best opponent Lucy ever had. Brandish was good too but she was and still is just way too powerful for Lucy. Mimi was perfect. She was extremely strong but she ended up pushing Lucy to do her very best.

This moment when someone so incredibly strong, someone who values strength over anything else bows down to Lucy and apologizes for underestimating her? It feels so good and satisfying. Mimi fought Lucy on her full strength and lost.

Mimi really respects Lucy in her own way. She is naming her attacks hoping to enhance them believing that's what makes Lucy strong. In her own way she is trying to learn from Lucy.

Lucy is capable of so much more than she realizes. Mimi really made Lucy think and look for openings and strike as soon as she found them. Having an opponent like Mimi, who won't fall for the same trick twice pushed Lucy to keep doing something new with every move. But that's her biggest strength. She has a lot of powers at her disposal, she can summon allies to cover her whenever she wants and she is smart. So a fight like this suits her very well.

Lucy can summon her magic whip. I'm not sure if this was established before but it's really nice to know. It's her weapon of choice so it's great that she has access to it no matter what star dress she is wearing.

Lucy has a really strong bond with her spirits. She can communicate with them telepathically. It's not explicitly stated but I'm assuming that's how she made her plan with Aquarius and Gemini. Lucy knows her limitations. That's why she had Gemini chant the spell in advance.

Lucy knows her strengths and weaknesses. She has built up her powers knowing her limitations. Now she has started to fight with that in mind as well. I would like to say that Lucy is physically stronger than Mimi but that's not the case. Brute strength is not everything. In this and the last chapter she used her powers smartly and creativity to overcome an opponent who was clearly stronger than her. I think that's more impressive than display of brute strength.

Man this was a great chapter for Lucy. I'm really impressed with her. Lucy had so much potential. She might not be as physically strong as her teammates but there are so many creative ways for her to use her power. Other than her fight with Brandish this was the only time she is using her power this way and I love seeing it.

First of all what I loved it her attacks worked. Her first kick didn't work so she used a star dress. That had a little bit of effect. Then she summoned Gemini and did a double kick. That did work.

She was actually able to hurt Mimi.

Mimi's attitude towards Lucy was interesting. She realized Lucy was fighting better now and she tried to rationalize that by thinking it must be because Lucy is naming her kicks. She even started naming her own attacks because the girl was convinced the only reason Lucy's attack hurt her is because naming your attacks must result in increased power. She had this idea in mind that she is so much more powerful than Lucy and Lucy herself is weak. When Lucy said she was fine Mimi was annoyed, she didn't believe that.

Then she summoned her Virgo form and went underground. I liked that. She knows she wouldn't be able to stand against that so she used the power that she had at her disposal to avoid it. Then she used element of surprise to attack Mimi, both by coming up unexpectedly and by using an attack Mimi wouldn't expect.

Mimi doesn't know how Lucy's power works. She kept comparing Lucy to Youko. From her point of view Lucy can manipulate water and summon spirits. That worked in Lucy's favor. And so far she has used only three out of the nine powers that she had at her disposal. Not to mention she can summon spirits, merge their powers and merge star dress.

This chapter utilized Lucy's power really well. It showed that her friends are her strength and she is at her best when she's fighting with them or for them. I also liked that her opponent actually got hurt. The hero trying and trying but not managing to put a scratch on the villain only to take him out with one punch full of power of friendship. When the attacks work and they some damage, even if it's not that much it makes for a better story. It's a tiny bit of realism in an otherwise unrealistic story.

The look on her face gives me hope that we will get to see her being a badass in the next chapter as well.

That's the second time Lucy's magic has been compared to Youko's. Even though Youko pointed out that spirits are different from Yokai, ultimately it's the same type of magic. I can't help but wonder if it means something.

Aquarius is Joining Natsu and Lucy, possibly until the end of this arc. Celestial Magic is in itself has a lot of undiscovered potential and given everything the next few chapters would be perfect to explore that.

Let's speculate what's in store for Lucy heartfilia this arc.

Even though Mimi said Lucy lacks discipline she still acknowledged what Lucy is capable of. I'm guessing somewhere down the line these two will have a conversation where Mimi would say something along the lines of "you could be so much more but look what are you insted." and "you are too nice/sweet/gentel which is why you are weak". Lucy in fairy tail style tell her that no, it's her friends that give her the strength she needs to keep fighting.

As for her powers, the moment Youko started summoning my mind immediately went to Lucy. I'm glad they pointed out similarities between celestial spirit magic and what Youko does in canon.

Plus Aries knows what Yokai are. Likely she has encountered them before. In the previous arc we saw Lucy make an attempt to use Cana's cards. She failed but that's not the point. That scene established that a holder type wizard would have easier time with other holder type magic. It's not unreasonable to assume that a summoner would have an easier time with other summoner type magic. Especially now that she can summon spirits without her keys. Now whether or not Lucy would learn to summon beings that are not spirits is depending on long this arc is going to be. And even if she didn't learn how to learn summon other magical beings in this arc, I think she will at some point in the series.

This girl has come a long way. Really long. It's heartbreaking to see her like this.

But because of this, the thing that I'm most confident will happen in this arc is Lucy learning to open the gates to their full extend. Allowing her spirits to use their powers to the fullest. We have seen glimpses of it, especially with Loke. It always bugged me that she had ten, now nine of the thirteen most powerful spirits in the world and yet they get defeated pretty quickly. Finally that is going to change.
