Fandom Shipping Polls 2025 - Koushiro Izumi Shipping Analysis (Poll I + Poll II)
As pointed out in the main post, every single Chosen Child will get their individual analysis post to check on the status of the current popularity of their ships. We’re gonna take a look at Koushiro here - if you are interested in the results of 2023, feel free to check out the previous analysis.
With that out of the way, let’s get started!
The overall results / spreadsheet
Disclaimer: As the “Someone from Poll 1″ and “Someone from Poll 2″ option have been excluded from the final analysis due to redundancy reasons and all results were culminated in another “final count”, the results will not be 1:1 to what the polls look like:
Overall votes: 125 (approx. 85 after excluding votes for “Someone from Poll 1” and “Someone from Poll 2” from the complementary poll). The main poll received 72 votes, and the secondary poll received 53 votes.
The comments/tags did not provide a choice that wasn’t specifically mentioned in the polls themselves.
Ship Analysis
1st Place: With a lead of 37%, Taichi won the overall vote. Which, in terms of his role in the Adventure verse as Koushirou’s main point of contact throughout the entirety of the series, is not surprising overall. Koushiro is Taichi’s right-hand tech specialist and generally considered to be his best friend (besides Sora and Yamato), they share screentime and history together while solving problems and riddles to drive the plot forward, with a few emotional hick-ups in between, but a lot of mutual trust and loyalty to keep them focal points for one another. Breaking through the stereotypes of brawns/brains, extrovert/introvert or jock/nerd in several ways. Thanks to the various artists and writers, mostly in Japanese spheres (like Twitter), but also in English spheres, they are still one of the more viable ships out there. In comparison to the 2023 polls, the lead was less tremendous. Despite the fact that results were mostly the same, Taichi had won the poll back then with 55% compared to this year's 37%. So a exposure/follower bias still has to be considered since Koushiro is my favourite character and Taichi/Koushiro my favourite Digimon ship. While I am not intending to downplay their popularity in itself (despite the fandom being fairly quiet at the moment), the results may have looked different in other spheres of the internet.
2nd Place: The second spot goes, without a single shred of doubt, once again to Mimi (28%), as Koushiro/Mimi is considered to be one of the most popular Koushiro-centric ships world-wide. This is due to their set-up in the series as being odd-balls of the same age while simultaneously bouncing off of each other very well as one of the go-to “opposites attract” dynamics. Additionally, Tri canonically made Koushiro crush on Mimi, solidifying a consistent fanon-headcanon (which usually goes the other way round, with her having a crush on him instead). While the portrayal of the crush was not appreciated equally everywhere, they have always been going strong for valid reasons - and Mimi’s number of votes (24) was closer to Taichi’s (32) than in the 2023 polls (19 to 51). While she never surpassed him at any point in the voting, the gap was much smaller this time.
3rd Place: This has been a curious one - as Taichi and Mimi already took up most of the votes as being Koushiro’s most viable options, the race for the third spot had been, once again, a bit more variable throughout the voting. Interestingly enough, the option with the third most votes (11%) had been the "Ace/No ship" option, implying that the majority of voters don't see him compatible with anyone but either Taichi or Mimi - or tend to not ship him romantically at all. Which is not an unlikely choice, considering a common interpretation of the computer nerd/support character trope (with more interest in problem-solving than social mingling). On the other hand, he simply may not be considered to have much romantic chemistry with the rest of the cast. If we have to name a third human character he tends to be shipped with, Hikari (6%) would eventually win. While its popularity has dwindled a lot in recent years, Tumblr is actually one of the few internet spaces that considers Koushiro/Hikari as a somewhat valid choice besides the comparably huge shipping “giants” that took over 1st and 2nd place. As they did share subtle but gentle moments together throughout the Dark Master’s Arc in 01, the World Tour Arc in 02 and Tri, having both displayed a deep connection to the Digital World.
Niche Ships (“Honorary mentions”): Granted, there aren’t a lot of votes left to work with, but we shall take a look at the niche choices after all: That includes Menoa (5%), his unnamed friend from America (4%), Miyako (2%) and, last but not least, Sora (2%). With Menoa having major interactions with him in Kizuna, serving as some sort of genius rival, it makes sense to see her here - and even though we never get to actually see his friend from the US, he is still a constant he appears to have stayed in touch with over the years. Miyako certainly has an appeal as his "computer nerd Kouhai" - and Sora serves as a somewhat outlandish "let's ship the paralleled redheads" niche in recent years. The "Others" option also scored 4% in this section, even though no concrete characters have been mentioned here.
Rarepair Hell (“The 1 vote squad”): This one goes out to Meiko (1%) and the "OC" option.
No audience (“0 votes go to…”): The list was pretty large this time, consisting of: Yamato, Jou, Takeru, Daisuke, Ken, Iori and Willis. For comparison's sake, only Yamato and Meiko had received 0 votes back in 2023.
What did the other polls say?
Koushiro won Mimi’s poll (26%), came in second in Taichi’s (24%), thus mirroring his own results to a certain degree. For comparison's sake: He had won Taichi's poll and had come second in Mimi's in 2023.
As for the majority of the other polls, he turned out to be a rather rare choice overall, which is in line with his own results: He got - surprisingly enough - 5% in Sora's poll, 4% in Hikari's, 3% in Yamato's and 2% in each Jou's and Takeru's. Daisuke and Iori got the honorary 1% vote each. While those numbers are still comparably low due to the small sample size, it's still notable that, back in 2023, Koushiro had gotten 7% in Iori's poll, 10% in Hikari's (thus coming in third in her poll overall) and merely 1% in Sora's - showing that those niche choices are quite a fleeting moment.
Ken and Miyako were the only characters in whose polls he received 0 votes.
Notable additions / comments / thoughts
Similar to Sora’s poll, both the low sample size and the overall established fandom preferences were the main drivers in Koushiro’s polls. Despite a potential exposure bias towards Taichi/Koushiro, it was to be expected that Taichi and Mimi would receive most of the votes and dominate the polls overall, as they have historically been the most popular shipping choices for him due to their dynamics and interaction patterns - which is perfectly understandable, as Taichi is portrayed as one of the characters Koushiro interacts with the most throughout big chunks of the entire series, whereas Mimi is literally framed to be a love interest for him in Tri. The other options have all been very niche in (very low) numbers and considering the huge popularity of the first two choices, it seems logical that the rest may prefer not to ship him romantically at all. Koushiro being on the asexual spectrum is a rather popular headcanon based on his personality after all. Hikari may be generally considered viable in certain niche fandom corners due to their personalities and the few interactions they had - but that doesn't say much, considering how she only received f i v e votes overall.
The comments and the tags have only referred to the already mentioned choices - namely the Yagami siblings, which have been mentioned at length above. So the “Others” option did not reveal any other potentially preferred suitors.
