untitled, Mimi Young
Whether in a forest or a city, I get excited by the disparate elements that coexist and the imagery that emerges by accident. I find and repeat motifs that facilitate my experience of the surface. I work from a basic process of birth, age, death, rebirth or create, decay, repair, renew. I primarily paint on paper and my process includes layers of drawing and my own hybrid of transfer painting; adding and subtracting along the way. I find this helps me achieve the element of surprise that I need in a piece. Currently, I am obsessed with perimeters. I find that while making marks allows me to move through the space and is more grounding, making shapes allows me to focus on form; I vacillate between the two.
