Night ramblings about my Muse.
Thinking about my Muse again, and I was struck by ONE fact: how it makes sense for Bill to make deals. Thank you Edwin Abbott, and thank you history of humanity. Bill can be interpreted as the Devil, because of his triangular shape made of threee 60° (basicaly 666 if we get rid of the zeros), and the other side of the coin of all his bargains. BUT then the Flatland canon came into my life and I was like "Isoceles: soldiers. Equilaterals: tradesmen.” TRADESMEN. Definitely, Bill is the most brilliant, ever, character ever written.
All the more as he offers knowledge (whatever the price), even perhaps a glimpse of the infinite through his breaking the rules, thus showing how society, and the codes and morals it has created, is all but a lie in the grand harmony of the Universe. Like a Prometheus (this comparison has also been made my @f-imaginings in the masterpiece Knowing Me, Knowing you), or like Lucifer himself. “Reality is an illusion,” he claims in the canon series (Dreamscraperers, Gravity Falls), as if wanting to hint, not only at the closed mindedness of human society, but also at the even straighter rules and codes of his long lost homeworld. Just like the Bearer of Light. But is this his Paradise Lost? It could be. “Saw his own dimension burn / Misses home and can’t return/ Says he’s happy, he’s a liar” says the poem by the Axolotl. If the canon only hints at Bill’s mourning for his homeworld in the poem, KMKY hints at it a little more, on two occasions. One, when Bill sketches other triangles on a sheet in Ford’s mindscape, the other, when he mentions the time redo he wanted to use when he won Globnar. If Bill " [believes] rules I don’t like are made to be broken,” (KMKY, Chapter 50) he seems to miss the safety and reassurance of a home, of which he finds echoes in Stanford’s domestic life at the shack, once he gets used to the holiday-like rhythm they both share together. Yearning for a long lost childhood home, pining for the shelter of a love home he can never have, Bill thus appears as the perfect Tragic Hero, both according to the Antique and mythological model, and to the contemporary one. In antiquity, tragic heroes fought against fate, against forces strongest than themselves, carried by their hubris, violence bringing more violence, bringing the hero to his tragic end. If the formula has, nowadays, changed slightly, in the fact that the tragic hero fights society and its moral code and rules, the end is always the same: violence backlashes hard, and our hero faces a tragic end. This slight change, however, has brought to the notion of tragic hero something that was absent from their Antique counterparts: fighting against societies and rules which can be unfair, contemporary tragic heroes are relatable and mostly receive all the sympathy of the audience, as they can be seen as icons of the rebellious fighter against an unjust power in place. If the violence which animates him - bringng more violence toward him- points at Bill as a tragic hero, it seems interesting to point out that he fights both forces. One th one hand, he is constantly against society, thoroughly breaking the rules, and trying to show how wrong and arbitrary they are. On the other, is runs a race against fate itself, doing all he can to ignore the prophecy, hoping that, this way, it will never come true. But that would be forgetting about a character of the utmost importance, who could be seen as the very hand of fate: Jheselbraum, the Oracle, who was a student of Argos Panoptes, sharing the school benches with Bill. If I may come back to Jheselbraum later (as well as on many other characters and themes), the prophecy itself shows yet another interesting aspect of Bill: his denial of reality. Indeed, he does all he can to ignore it, thus concealing it from Stanford (even when that could have made the man trust him, even slightly). This wilful ignorance - that he also imposes on Ford (on several subects) he also imposes, in a majestic contradictory manner (he and Ford both claiming that they hate and despise wilful ignorance) - seems to follow the All Knowing Eye on several levels: not wanting to believe the prophecy, not wanting to see his future with Sixer, not wanting to see the true nature of his relationship with him. “Can he see, sure. But does that mean he looks?” (Pyronica, Chapter 48) seems to sum up Bill’s tragic hubris, his melancholy tendency to choose to dwell in illusions rather than reality, all the while he is trying to point out the illusions of too well organised clockwork societies... (these thoughts need to be put in order, I am getting somewhere and everything makes sense, and it’s late, but here, have a glimpse of my mind, a sneak peak into my brute thesis thouhgts, goodnight ▲♪ )
“I’ve heard about you, Shade. The boy who couldn’t die, who tried to die...the one Fate brought back to serve a higher purpose. As an example, to show that Sorrow would always linger, no matter how hard you tried to kill it...that it would ever be a shadow behind everyone, lurking, just waiting for the light to get bright enough so he can get darker. Yes, I’ve heard. Every smile on your face is a cruel irony.”
Just a stray Pokemon musings but isn’t it weird that ??? was still used up until Gen IV, was retired for Gen V, and then we had the Fairy type introduced in Gen VI? Like Arceus had a ??? form just in case, and then we got the Pixie Plate after ??? was gone, so from a Poke-verse theological standpoint, The Original One has always wielded the 18 elements with researchers and priests alike going nuts in trying to figure out the “missing element” which could help explain the natural world.
And then there’s the wonder of with Gen VI being the start of an “alternate timeline” from the first 5 gens, that the discovery of the “Pixie” / Fairy element came easier because it may have played a part in the creation of Mega Stones and therefore was more accessible for study. o.o
