Those hidden blessings
It’s odd... There are a lot of ways in which I realize I’m lucky. I get (for now at least) to earn a living telling stories and interacting with fans. My family is great and we’re all still very close and get along. I’ve got wonderful friends, great fans, and even my health is doing pretty good.
Then, sometimes out of nowhere, I’ll realize I’ve got something else going for me that I’d taken for granted. Something as simple as looking in the mirror and seeing myself. I’m not talking about something as simple as still having my vision. I’m talking about identity.
Lots of people I follow, and many more I’ve seen share posts, grapple with the concept of “self” every day. They wake up and they don’t really know who they are. They can’t decide, or can’t figure out, if the person on the outside and the person on the inside are the same. Or perhaps they know they are the same, but they aren’t happy with that person. Or perhaps they know they are different but don’t know what to do about it, how to change their outside to suit their inside, or their inside to suit their outside. People who have to worry about what people will thing or say or to when the day finally comes that the self has to change. These are beautiful, intelligent, talented people. People with their lives ahead of them, and all of the same challenges we all face, but also this extra one. The hurdle of figuring out who it is that is trying to clear these hurdles.
And then there’s me; a hairy, weird looking oaf with thinning hair. A guy slamming into middle age, looking increasingly like a hobo as I settle more and more into the hermit-like author lifestyle. That guy staring at me every morning as I stand in front of the mirror and try to decide if I need a haircut isn’t exactly a prize, but he’s definitely me. Knowing that, it turns out, wasn’t a foregone conclusion, so I’m happy it turned out that way.
Good luck to all you folks searching for yourself. Hope you find that person soon, and that he/she/they turn out to be as cool and bright and creative as the person who’s been doing the searching.
I honestly wish Home Ec was a class choice at my school. I really want to know how to work a sewing machine or cook something without having to ask my fucking grandmother. Also, the closest thing to shop we have is Tech Theatre...which honestly helped dick all. No lockers either...god the S.Cali school system kinda sucks...hard.
Writing about film is very difficult. I say this because there's often multiple streams of stuff going on in a movie at any given point. Between trying to piece together the fictional world of the movie and then accounting for the technical work that establishes the aesthetics, there's a lot to get lost in. So this outline right now is just a collection of discrete observations and recurring themes that I can't turn into subsections that will flow well. I'm still thinking.
NEWS FLASH
The spicy tuna roll is actually ridiculously spicy. It is beyond spicy. My lips are numb. I am regretting many decisions in this moment. Should've gone with the crab, yet I'm gonna eat it anyway because yolo.
Also Alex fixed my Skyrim so I'm gonna dick around on there and pretend to be Alduin cause quite honestly I feel I could burn down small villages with this sushi.
