The whole thing is about Katniss and Peeta, and maybe a few other "main" characters. The rest are just supporting characters. Okay, I get it that she understood what Wiress wanted to say, because Beetee was unconscious. In the movie it makes no sense at all. And then Katniss is the smart one for figuring it out, and all Wiress gets is a pat on the shoulder like a good little dog. And then she served her purpose and gets killed. For the sake of..warning them? One character too much to drag along?
Ugh exactly. Even Gale gets pushed aside at the end and turns into a total douche in MJ just so that Katniss has a clear path to Peeta. And yes, exactly! There’s a huge plot hole in the movie because they didn’t make him unconscious; conscious Beetee would have figured out what Wiress meant immediately. And then he could’ve told the others and made sure Wiress got her proper credit, instead of it all going to Katniss, as usual. And don’t even get me started on those saying “Oh Finnick figured it out before they even met up with Wiress!” no Finnick was taking a freaking shot in the dark; Wiress is the one who actually figured it out. Wiress’s death could have been tragic, what with the whole “canary in a coal mine” business and it could’ve developed Beetee’s character beautifully, as much as I’d have loved for them to live happily ever after. But it’s just shoved aside. Unimportant. But we have to hear about Finnick worrying about Annie about every other page, and how Katniss is going to die for Peeta every other page, and we can’t be spared a paragraph or two’s worth of insinuations that Beetee is actually devastated and mourning the loss of his friend. And it’s like Wiress didn’t even exist in MJ. One of the many reasons I dislike MJ (in fact I only like it for all the feelsy Johanna/Katniss and Beetee/Gale).
