“Basil Kirchin is a unique and fascinating soul. I confess I had never heard of him until I received this free sampler from Trunk Records because I’d ordered several other CDs from Jonny Trunk’s emporium of the weird and wonderful world of sound. This sampler was produced by Trunk as part of Hull’s City of Culture year in 2017, which organised a weekend celebration of the life and work of Kirchin, the city’s long-lost son. Lost, only in that his talents are not more widely known and celebrated. The track listing on the sampler is almost identical to Trunk’s follow up release Basil Kirchin Is My Friend. . Kirchin started his musical life in the 1950s playing drums in his father’s jazz band, but it was his own experimental compositions in the 1960s for which he is rightly lauded and unjustly not famous enough. He started producing electronic music for imaginary films, a soundtrack for the world inside his head perhaps. And from there started to record a whole range of what is known as library music for films, TV documentaries and theatre. Many of these early electro-jazz-field recordings were for De Wolfe Music, generally regarded as the oldest, largest and original producer of library or production music...” .
