In January, our book club pick was This Darkness Mine by Mindy McGinnis. 

I absolutely LOVED this book! It made me feel so unbelievably uncomfortable, and I always respect a book that can do that!

This book took me a really long time to finish, not because of how difficult the subject was, not because of the alarmingly explicit descriptions, and not at all because I had work to do. I just really didn't want the story to end. Mindy McGinnis' poetic lines, the broken but whole characters, and the way all of society's issues with girls' "position" in life and boys' behaviors, highschool, rape, sexual assault, animal abuse, broken families, etc. were sprinkled in, I would read a chapter a day in the beginning, because I didn't want to rush through the chapters despite how short they were. Alex Craft blew me away. I have read of many strong girls (both in fiction and non-fiction, in YA fantasy, and in autobiographies and memoirs) but Alex's inner strength and resolve, despite how "wrong" her behavior may seem to others, it was nothing I had never known of before. Anyone who takes the time to read this book, no matter how long it takes them to get through it, will keep a piece of Alex with them (I know I will). Some of the lessons I learned about each of the characters include: 

You can have a broken family and feel dead inside, but still be reawakened with the help of the right people.

You can be a preacher's kid or fit into a certain label/box, but still have the ability to be yourself and create your own story.

You can be the player who sleeps around and never cares for the hearts you break, but when you meet that special someone, you can change for the better and realize the error of your ways.

You can make a plethora of mistakes and judgments and be prejudiced, but if you take the time to learn something new, hear someone else's side of the story, and take into consideration other people's feelings, you can always change your life around.

and above all: 

If you do good in the world, or even in just one person's world, you will always live on (in their lives, in their hearts, in their minds).

This is a story I will definitely revisit and one I will recommend to anyone and everyone I know.
