Back in 2011 I didn't realize I was making a liminal space.

It turns out gargamel is fucking cursed, at least in Beta 1.3. I was in this dark space for bloody ages (with no brightness slider settings) trying to dig out of an admittedly awesome underground grassy area when I could hardly see anything, and the game even crashed at one point before making me die inside a wall on reload and then I said screw it and resorted to NBT position hacking.
