My take on the Microsoft/Mojang deal
As you have probably heard, Microsoft just recently purchased Mojang and with them, the rights to Minecraft. What does that mean? Honestly, no one knows, except for, you know, Microsoft. Well since this is my blog I figured I'd give my 2 cents ya know? Feel me? OK here we go.
First, don't freak out. Minecraft on PC, PS3 and PS4 isn't going anywhere. And the Vita version will release as well. Why you ask? Why? Cause Microsoft is money hungry like every other business, that's why. And here is what they'll do. They'll keep Minecraft growing on PC and PlayStation platforms so there will be more Minecraft fans. The mods on PC probably wont be bothered, I'm sure they'll let everyone mod to, again, keep the community growing. Updates will continue to roll out for a while and then they'll stop. That's when things will go downhill.
What I'm about to mention will be a gradual change, but this is what I think will happen over the next 2-3 years. First, price increase. Minecraft will probably remain at $20 on console and $27 on PC, but they will increase eventually, probably to $25 on console and $30 on PC. But before that, the price of skin packs and texture packs will go up. I'm predicting $4 for skin packs and $5 for texture packs. Also, skin packs will have fewer skins in them. Then, the dagger, Minecraft 2. They will release a Minecraft 2, priced $40-60, and exclusively on Xbox One. Which is why they'll keep Minecraft growing on PC and PlayStation consoles, so more people want it, making more people want an Xbox One. That is their plan... I think.
But hey, I could be wrong right? I've been wrong before. Maybe Microsoft will treat it right. Keep the free updates coming, along with skin packs and texture packs. Maybe they'll even keep the price the same. Maybe they won't make a sequel and Minecraft will go on like it has been. I honestly can't see any world where Microsoft would do this, but maybe, just maybe they will.
I'm actually really upset at Markus "Notch" Persson. Not because he's super rich now, not because he sold Mojang, but rather, because he sold it to Microsoft. He should never have sold it to console maker, cause now it's in the hands of people who will most likely force us to pay $400 for an Xbox One just to play Minecraft. Why not sell it to, oh I don't know, how about Activision? Activision is a 3rd party publisher who puts games on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and even on Nintendo consoles. And with how they handled Destiny, letting Bungie make the game on their own terms, I'd say they would have handled Minecraft just fine. Maybe not as good as Mojang did while under Notch's supervision, but still better than letting Microsoft have it.
So yeah, don't freak out, we still have Minecraft and always will, but the future of it is shady and probably only good for Xbox players with extra cash.
