The gleaming red gyarados belonging to Miguel had long since vanished into the low cloud cover of the early morning sky. Xander had his hand on his shoulder, putting pressure to the fresh gash Amelia had sliced open. The bleeding had stopped by now, as they sat side by side in the sand of Whirl Island's westerly beach, in the shadow of some large boulders.
This was the rendezvous point, where the freed prisoners would be taken to await their salvation via transport boats.
Xander perked up at the sight of something on the horizon, on the water. Boats were coming. And just in time too. Down the beach, someone fast approached.
A single figure soon turned into two, then three, a dozen, a multitude. Limping, sprinting, flying, carrying each other out, a steady stream of soldiers and POWs flowed down the beach.
Jumping to his feet, Xander waved an arm high over his head. Now was the time to be calling attention to the rendezvous point.
The boats beached and began filling fast. Amidst the stream of people and pokemon, Xander could pick out people he knew. Chase Austerby, then the rest of the squad, mingled with the crowds boarding. ...But where was that blonde kid?

The venom of that sea monster had been potent and quick to do its work. Perry had been left behind, delirious and lost in the caverns that networked the inside of the Whirl Islands. He'd been found though, his prostrate form almost passed up for dead before someone noticed the weak mewls coming from him. He'd been found rather quickly, by two guards high on adrenaline and nationalistic rage. A few kicks and some rough handling, just for the amusement of dredging more whimpers from the stricken man. Then they were heading back through the tunnels, back toward the surface, toward the prison, with Perry dragged between the two. Soon there were faint red streaks forming on the floor, as the rough, worn rock they walked on wore through fabric then skin on his knees.

A hard trail to pick up, but with psychic minds and a keen snuffling pig snoot they were soon on the right path. And soon Xander could follow the trail himself too, as it was literally painted on the floor in red. The sight made his stomach sink and his feet quicken. Soon they were running, up tunnels that sloped more sharply with each stride. Then the path went vertical. Metal rungs like staples in the rock face led up to a solid welded metal hatch, shut tight. Alina and Isa stood directly under the hatch, side by side looking up. White light shined out of Isa's pearls, and Alina's eyes lit up in vivid sky blue.

In the prison yard Perry was tossed to the ground by his captors. Whatever they were saying he could not hear, and if he could he couldn't have made it out anyway in the state he was in. He was simply there in a haze of unfocused sensation, his mind rattled and swimming with the poison his body was straining to flush out.
He was rolled onto his back and hardly knew it. The light changed and the feeling of the ground under him shifted, and that was all he registered.
He could barely see the guards standing over him, and he didn't hear the crash of metal as the hatch was thrown off the entrance to the sea cave that Johto used. The vibrations of metal striking dirt mere yards away did reach him, as did the stomping feet of the guards and of pokemon around him. But there was little he could do about it, and indeed little he did.
He was dragged then by the ankle. Shaking and delirious he tried to sit up. For a moment his vision began to defog and his ears cleared. There was a fight going on around him. It vanished again in a mist, then once more came back.
It was Xander. They were barely a yard from the hatch when Xander met his wobbling gaze and leaned quickly forward. His face was bright with the energy and hyper-awareness of battle.
All he said was, "I'm not losing even one more squad mate."
Xander grabbed Perry around the middle and hoisted him to his feet. Lady gathered around them, as Isa and Alina held back the few guards who could be spared to try to keep this one enemy imprisoned.

Teleport. And suddenly they were on the beach.
But what had that been, that Perry had caught a glimpse of?
He fell over, suddenly unsupported. He lay in the sand and his perception vanished again. There were Kanto soldiers around, the last of the boats still there. He was whisked to safety, him, Isa, Lady and Alina.
What was that he had caught a glimpse of?
In the bright flash of Lady's teleport, a wash of black had slipped in. He'd been tugged, a hand that once held him up suddenly clung to him and was ripped away. For another moment Perry's vision cleared. Xander's three pokemon seemed to be fighting amongst themselves. Alina ran back and forth frantically while Isa shrieked at her. Lady was hopping madly in place. It was clear she didn't know what to do.
And then everything blurred again, and went black.
