When you woke up, the bed was empty. Left in the space previously occupied by Seungyoun was a mess of ruffled sheets and a blanket which was was draped across your shoulder.
A dull ache shot up from your neck, a sharp reminder of the awkward position you’d slept in. You sighed, rubbing your neck gently to make the pain fade.
From downstairs you heard noises. Rattling dishes, voices talking and the thrum of tv running in the background. It was almost as if the events of last night were not true at all, for everything seemed so calm.
You staggered to your feet, stretching out your numb limbs before following the voices downstairs.
There was Minhee, making pancakes by the stove and leaving the kitchen in a chaotic mess. Dohyun sat by the kitchen table, digging into his cereal while simultaneously taking small bites of the pancakes already prepared on the table. You sighed. The boy was going to eat himself sick.
You turned your head, and there, on the opposite and of the house sat Seungyoun, on a sofa that looked away from the kitchen and the hallway. You couldn’t see him properly with his back towards you, but what little you could gather with the limited vision was that he was holding a cup and sat hunched over the fireplace.
Your first instinct was to sprint over and ask if he was alright, but then a sudden memory stopped you.
You remembered last night when he clutched onto your wrist, pulling you down beside him on the floor; as he writhed through a nightmare on the bed, and you couldn’t do anything but watch before slipping into a painful sleep yourself.
Silently, you turned towards the kitchen where Minhee greeted you loudly,
“Good morning Y/n! Did you get a good night’s sleep?”
He smiled at you wryly. You only grunted before settling down beside Dohyon.
Wordlessly, Minhee placed a plate with a pancake in front of you before drizzling some maple syrup on top of it. You thanked him but he only shrugged and sat beside you watching you eagerly cutting into the pancake.
“So… You’re gonna tell me how you got your bodyguard poisoned?”
You swallowed a big bite before reaching for a glass of water.
“I don’t know,” you said. “He was dropping me off from the dance lessons when it happened. At first I thought he was drunk but the blood gave it away.”
You shivered at the thought.
Minhee eyed you curiously, judging the circumstances once again. It was always a habit of his.
“He’s only your bodyguard…right?"
You turned your head towards him, eyebrows furrowed.
"What’s that supposed to mean?”
Minhee looked over your head to see if Dohyun was nearby, but he was gone with his empty bowl of cereal abandoned beside you.
“Don’t get me wrong, Y/n, I don’t mean to judge things or anything but the way you reacted around the situation last night…”
Your heart thrummed as sweat rolled down your forehead.
“… I don’t know, I felt something different. Something strong. Your tears, your constant questions about if he’ll survive, and… ”
Minhee trailed off, perhaps not wanting to say the next part.
“… You weren’t on the couch in the morning either. If there’s anything, absolutely anything Y/n, you know you can tell me, right?”
Rage boiled through your veins but you suppressed. What was he even talking about? What tears? What feelings? You had felt for Seungyoun as you have felt for any human being. That was it. Or was it?
“You say you’re not judging anything but you ended up doing the very same. You know there is only one person for me. And there is no question to it.”
You stood up before you could end up contradicting your statement. Or before Seungyoun emerged before your eyes, his voice far away as it was last night.
To prove to yourself that there really was only one person for you, you walked across the hallway and into the living room where Seungyoun sat, still leaning over the fireplace. The mug in his hands was still full, brimming with what could’ve been coffee.
If he noticed you walking into the room, he showed no signs of it.
Panic struck the moment you managed to sit on the sofa beside his, wondering why you came here in the first place.
What do I say? You thought. Perhaps, ’Oh hey Seungyoun, looks like you survived! I’m sorry I ended up sleeping on the floor beside the bed, but it’s not my fault you held onto my wrists so tightly but now my friend things there’s something between you and I and I’m completely fucked’, would suffice?
“How are you feeling now?” Your voice was calm, barely any louder than the fire crackling nearby.
His eyes were intent on the little embers flying away above the fire, the light reflecting on his face.
His voice was stern, but it was nothing new to you.
You sat there for a while before the awkward silence almost urged you to walk away.
“How does you friend know so much about poisons?” Seungyoun looked at you, an eyebrow raised in curiosity.
You shifted in your seat, glancing behind you at Minhee in the kitchen before saying, “His father is a toxicologist and naturally Minhee likes studying toxicology as well.”
“Well, thank you… and him.” Seungyoun was hesitant with his words. Hesitant to let emotions slip, “And I am sorry.” The warm fire had seeped into his icy heart, slowly breaking down its walls. There was no return from it.
“I get the thank you but why the sorry?"
Seungyoun turned to you, a small smile burning through your lips.
"For holding your wrist all night long."
Despite his best efforts, a shade of crimson rose up to his cheeks. Then the memory came. His hand around your wrist, face inches away from yours. The poison fading in his veins, the cure burning in his eyes.
"Ahh, it’s alright. You were in your sleep.” You laughed nervously, trying your best to move away from the matter.
The silence reigned for an ephemeral moment, before you decided to lessen the tension in the air.
“So… Why would someone poison the managing director of a famous hotel?"
There it was again. The little game of lies and secrets between you two. By now you thought it would get a bit boring, but it was only getting interesting every day.
"I don’t know, why wouldn’t someone?” Seungyoun shrugged, the corners of his lips pulling up in an obscure smirk.
“Because I’m pretty sure that’s not how things work in the hospitality business,” You said. “You’re not just the managing director of the hotel, are you?”
Seungyoun heaved a sigh. He rolled his eyes before huffing out a laugh, “Fine. Your cracked the case, Sherlock.”
Seungyoun’s smile persisted for a long time before abruptly falling when he asked, “Did you tell anything to Mr. Seungwoo? About last night? ”
You shook your head, “No. In fact I haven’t called him back yet, my phone was likely ringing all night.” You cocked your head to one side, “Why? Did someone tell him about what happened?”
Seungyoun turned away from the fire, “He called me earlier. Someone told him that I didn’t go back home last night.”
You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion.
On the table in front of you, your phone buzzed as Seungwoo’s caller ID popped up on the screen.
You picked it up before looking at Seungyoun.
“Y/n?! You know this is the thirtieth time I’m calling you in the past 4 hours. You had me worried sick.” Seungwoo’s loud voice blared through the phone, making you wince.
“Hey, I know I’m sorry, the dance lesson really knocked me out last night.”
You heard Seungwoo sigh. “You ought to be more responsible Y/n. What about Seungyoun? Is he with you? He isn’t picking my calls either.”
Your eyes shot towards the boy in question.
“Hmm, Seungyoun?“ You spoke into the phone.
Seungyoun gestured towards you, making a cross sign with his signs repeatedly until you got the hint.
"No, I’ve no idea. He dropped me off last night but he seemed a bit sick. Why, is everything alright?”
“No. Dongpyo told me he didn’t make it back home or to the hotel last night. I’ll call him again later. And I’ll talk to you later as well, I’ve got to go.”
You said your goodbyes before he hung up and you looked up at Seungyoun again.
Seungyoun thought of the glass of alcohol he drank last night. The one meant for Jinhyuk. That was it, that was the poison. And the most likely suspect of the attempted poisoning was Dongpyo. Only he was stupid enough to do something like that.
But the question was; who was the poison meant for?
Sighing, Seungyoun said, “Of course he did.”
*********************************
Seungyoun grabbed Dongpyo by the collar the moment he stepped into the hotel, dragging him into the extensive, empty meeting room.
After leaving your house, Seungyoun had managed to go back home, take a good, long shower and think the facts through. Why would Dongpyo poison the drink?
The only possible explanation was that the poison was meant for Jinhyuk, and the blame was meant for Seungyoun. After all, who would you expect to have poisoned a crime lord’s drink? A seemingly harmless 17 year old or the guy who had threatened him right in front of his men? The connection wasn’t hard to make.
“Look at you! You’re alive!” Dongpyo smiled as if this was all a stupid joke.
Seungyoun released his collar, letting him stagger to gain his balance again.
“Why’d you poison the drink?”
“You hate Jinhyuk. I hate Jinhyuk. I thought it’d be best to get rid of him while we could.”
Seungyoun shook his head, agitated.
“You fucking idiot, do you think I’m a thickheaded fool?"
Despite the anger, Seungyoun kept his voice calm. It always gave him an edge over his opponent.
"You poisoned Jinhyuk’s drink and then you called me over, because you knew I would put up a show. And at the end of the day, everyone would suspect me, because no one knows how much of a fucking menace you are.”
Dongpyo’s face straightened. His lips curled downwards, eyes twitching in an unknown emotion.
“How dare you talk to me like that?! I will tell Seungwoo-”
Seungyoun laughed, “Not before I tell him what you did. And then perhaps I’ll finally get rid of you.”
He opened his phone, tapping a few times to call Seungwoo.
“Or maybe I should tell hyung that his faithful enforcer and his lover spent the night together? Wouldn’t that be enticing?”
Seungyoun hesitated before pressing the dial button. He looked up at Dongpyo who was smiling again.
“Stop making up lies, he won’t believe you.”
“He will, or he won’t. But it’ll do the same damage nonetheless. Y/n probably lied to him when he asked where you were last night, and you did too. Now when I tell him the real story, that would at least taint your image in his mind.”
Seungyoun wanted to punch something. He wanted to beat Dongpyo until he had fractured his ribs and stopped his heart.
He walked over, closing the distance between him and Dongpyo.
“My eyes are on you, Dongpyo. You do anything stupid, and I’ll make sure-”
To kill you slowly and painfully, to asphyxiate you until your lungs give in and then I’ll bury you where no one would come to mourn the devil that you are.
“-the consequences won’t be good.”
“Tsk. Tsk. Tsk,” Dongpyo said. “Now that’s not the way to talk to your boss’ brother.”
“Adopted brother.” The word pulled at Dongpyo’s emotions as Seungyoun thought they would, but he didn’t wait to savor the distorted expression on his face.
Seungyoun turned away before briskly walking to his office, where, unknown to him, an old friend waited for him with a deadly proposal.
And when he did enter his office and saw the brown haired boy, Seungyoun felt a plethora of emotions, most dominant being nostalgia and then anger.
“Why are you here?” Seungyoun stood at the door of his office, as the boy, Hangyul, turned and looked at him, smiling.
“Is that how you treat an old friend?” Hangyul stood up, walking over in front of Seungyoun before extending a hand to him.
Seungyoun ignored it, moving past him to his seat behind the desk. Hangyul didn’t seem to mind the blatant display of ill manners for he still smiled as he sat at one of the chairs in front of the desk.
“You haven’t changed one bit.” Hangyul said.
If he thought his words would elicit a smile from Seungyoun, he could not be more wrong. Seungyoun was irritated, and Hangyul was just feeding to his annoyance.
“Look, Hangyul,” Seungyoun leaned over the desk, “I’m having a pretty rough day, and it’ll take me 2 seconds to call someone in and have you chucked over the hotel’s roof, so whatever you’re here to say must be worth all that trouble.”
Hangyul’s smile dropped, “Calm down. I’m only here to give you a message.”
“Did that bastard, Jinhyuk send you?” Seungyoun sneered.
After a long, vexing pause Hangyul replied, “You are asked to apologize to Mr. Lee. Just three small words: I. Was. Wrong. And nothing bad will happen.”
Hangyul’s face was stern when he repeated, “I. Was. Wrong.”
“Fuck. Off. Asshole,” said Seungyoun, “That’s also three words, much more effective, though.”
Hangyul waited for Seungyoun to continue, to say something else, but when he didn’t, his features softened, “Do it, Seungyoun. It won’t hurt your pride. I don’t want things to go down the wrong lane.”
“I am serious about having you chucked from over the roof.”
Hangyul looked on for a moment, only a moment. And then he smiled again and silently walked out of the office.
Seungyoun waited a minute after he left, and then he called Wooseok through his office’s landline.
It took Wooseok a few minutes to reach his office, and without a moment wasted, Seungyoun immediately asked, “Did you find it?”
Wooseok smirked before plopping down on the seat previously occupied by Hangyul.
“Followed President Lee’s men all the way to the warehouse. They’ve hoarded all the supply there.” The next part, he said slowly, eyes widening in astonishment, “Stacks upon stacks of coke… and perhaps even opium.”
For the first time in a long while, Seungyoun let himself smile. And then he laughed. The kind of laugh that enveloped the room, the kind of laugh he heard from you.
Because he got it. The location of the warehouse was his lever. And it was only an arm’s length away from him. One pull and he could see Jinhyuk crumbling down to nothing;
How could he not laugh at that? Seungyoun would laugh himself sick.
If someone told Seungyoun a few hours ago that he’d be taking dance lessons today, he would not have believed. But the good news Wooseok gave put him in a good mood, good enough to agree to be your partner for ballroom dancing because Minhee had taken the day off.
“So exactly how much of dancing do you know?” You raised an eyebrow at him. He fumbled with his hands around your waist before you grabbed his hand and placed it gently above your hips.
“Enough to not step on your feet?” He said, with a reassuring smile.
You chuckled as the music started, glancing for a moment at Hyeongjun who pouted as he was forced to pair up with Junho.
Surprisingly, Seungyoun caught the flow soon enough. After one or two missteps, he fell into the rhythm of the music, his hand by your waist loosening up, while the other clasped your hand tightly.
“How did it go back at the hotel? Did you find out who poisoned your drink?”
It was a bit difficult to talk to Seungyoun with his body so close to yours, but you managed to ask the question somehow.
Seungyoun looked away, anywhere that wasn’t your face when he answered, “You could say that, it’s nothing you need to worry about.”
“Never said I was worrying about it.” You chuckled nervously, hoping he didn’t think you were too invested in the whole ordeal around him. (Even though you were around 99% sure you were)
“You’ve caught the rhythm quite well,” you remarked, successfully changing the subject.
“I know, right? I think I’m doing even better than you.” He grinned teasingly, leaving you to gasp at the comparison.
“Says the person who said I dance so well just a day ago.”
Seungyoun scoffed, “I never said that.”
And a lot of other things which would make the air tense the moment I make mention of them, you thought.
“Well, I was poisoned,” He said, twirling you around in one swift tug.
“That’s no excuse.” You laughed, the small gesture making Seungyoun lose his step and step over your foot.
And he made the mistake every time you laughed.
“That’s the fifteenth time you’re stepping over my foot.” You were still laughing.
The sound was just too intoxicating, too alluring. It was louder than the music playing in the background, lovelier than the flowers lining his hotel’s lobby but as lethal as the poison coursing through his veins mere hours ago. A few days ago the thought would make him recoil in fear, but now it only pulled him in.
“This sucks.” Seungyoun said, the stupid grin still on his face.
“Only partially. You’re making it fun.”
Seungyoun made a confused face, “I thought you said I was a scary guy.” He was teasing you again.
“Seungwoo said that, not me. Besides, I don’t think you’re as scary as you like to be.” You looked at him, “I think you’re cute.”
Immediately, you bit into your tongue. A blush crept up to your face, staining your cheeks red. You lowered your head a little to obscure it but Seungyoun had already gotten a good look at it.
But he said nothing about it, thankfully.
The rest of the dance went away in a blur. Fortunately Seungyoun did not step on your poor feet for most of the time, and you managed to survive through the little space between you two.
The moment your instructor called for a break, you excused yourself and went to the washroom, splashing your face with cold water.
It was just the adrenaline, you told yourself.
And outside, Seungyoun told himself the same.
*****************************
[Text] Y/n: I’m still the better dancer. P.S My feet are swollen thanks to you :(
Seungyoun stared at the text and then he laughed and then he stared again.
[Text] Seungyoun: Okay, fine, I yield. You are the better dancer. Also, sorry for the feet. Wasn’t my intention, but at least you won’t ask me to dance with you again.
Seungyoun waited after sending you the text, his eyes drooping. But the notification bell pulled his eyes open.
[Text] Y/n: You’re mean :(
And a moment later, another came:
[Text] Y/n: Anyways, I should be off to bed. I’ll see you tomorrow. Obviously.
You smiled when you typed ‘obviously’.
Seungyoun only typed in a short ‘See you’ before glancing up at the recent logs in his phone. Just below your contact was Seungwoo, who he’d called before he took you to your dance lessons, giving him a shit excuse about not picking up his calls which Seungwoo seemed to believe.
Seungyoun placed the phone on his chest, smiling at the thought of you, frowning at the thought of Seungwoo, and scowling at the memory of Hangyul, an old friend, a betrayer who has asked for an apology on behalf of an enemy.
Except that he wasn’t getting an apology from Seungyoun.
A/N: I’m not particularly proud or fond of this chapter for some reason. Look out for some major twists and turns in chapter 6, though, because I’ve sworn on making no mercy!Seungyoun’s life a living hell lmao.
