50 Years Ago THis Week in Rockland: THE LONG WAY ‘ROUND – AT 12 MILES AN HOUR
Excerpt from The Journal News, week of May 8 - 14, 1966
Take a bearded Englishman from South Nutfield, put him in a toy car and send him on a trip around the world. Somehow he turns up in Nyack.
Jim Parkinson is making a 13,000-mile ‘round-the-world’ trip in a 350 pound auto which has a top speed of 12 miles an hour – when it’s revved all the way up to its unimpressive 3,000 RPM.
The 33-year-old aircraft draftsman, who lives in a suburb of London, started this odyssey last May 25 in his 1935 Rytecraft Scoota-Car, a classic English make automobile of which there are only 1,000 in existence.
“It is really a very easy machine to handle on a straight piece of road,” said the bearded Englishman. “Of course, I have to get out and walk it up any grades, it having just enough power to haul itself up without me in it.”
Yesterday his enthusiasm for sports cars brought him to Rockland County, to visit the Vintage Car Store on South Broadway.
“I left New York City a week ago and spent several days looking at vintage cars in Pelham, Stamford and Greenwich. I was advised to stop at the Vintage Auto Store – so here I am,” he said over a cup of coffee.
The HSRC is pleased to be compiling “This Week in Rockland” a weekly feature appearing in the Rockland Review. Check out other events that happened this week in history! On Newsstands everywhere or online a t www.rocklandreviewnews.com
