Root prefers to lie on the bed and feel the bruises bloom. She closes her eyes and describes them. Root describes bruises like connoisseurs describe wine.
“There’ll a nice one where you slammed me into the doorknob. Right around my hip. It’ll be full and dark. Exquisite, deep sensation whenever I get dressed" – she grins, without opening her eyes – “or undressed.”
“How’s the big one from last week?”

It’s thick and sticky and silent in the city tonight. The window is wide open, but there’s a strange hush – the taxis as quiet as crickets. Not a single siren.
It feels like the summer nights you used to spend with Hanna in Bishop, when the minutes dripped lazily away as you rested your head in her lap and she wove your hair between her fingers.
Just like that, this feeling, with Sameen’s fingers in your hair, the silent world outside, paused and brimming. The same helpless, longing prayer: however long this lasts, make it last just a little longer.

The problem with home-cooked burgers is they never make the patties thick enough. They end up all flimsy and dry and do nothing to counteract those bland buns. Ketchup won’t fix this shit. Maybe a slice of cheese between two patties…

One thing you can say for Root: she really goes all out when she goes undercover. Green shorts, a visor and a goddamn fanny pack.
“You look like someone’s mom.”
