Colorway: Victuuri Duetto

Base yarn: Cloudborn Highland Sock | 178 yards

This was the initial yarn that I set out to make this time. Its a long changing gradient yarn that is inspired by the costumes that Victor and Yuri wear during the Grand Prix exhibition. I wanted to make a gradient that blended the costumes of one from the other to symbolize their relationship. I dyed two skeins of this yarn.

Colorway: Victuuri Intermission

Base yarn: wool/polymide blend | 175 yards

I had a bunch of dye left over from the gradient yarn, so  decided to try dyeing a yarn that alternates sections of gradient and white. It ended up being trickier than I expected to get the exact result I wanted, but I like how it turned out.

Base yarn: wool/polymide blend | 175 yards

I used up the last of the dye by making a speckled yarn. I love how this one turned out.

First color experiments

Since I'm really just starting out with learning to dye yarn it's very much a trial and error process for me at the moment. I decided that it would make sense to make a bunch of mini-skeins so that I could test out colors without having to invest too much for yarn. I divided up one of my skeins into mini-skeins that were about 8-10 yards each so that it's just enough to crochet up into some flowers or something small no matter how the color turns out.

I started out using Wilton food dye because I had it in my kitchen already, and because there are some great resources that give you examples for color formulas. The best resource I have found is dye your yarn. They have a ton of examples for color using Wilton dyes as well as other food coloring and even Kool aid! It's such a comprehensive resource, that I started out by picking a color I wanted to make from their examples, and jumped right in!

This was where I learned my first lesson:

Using the reference I mixed Wilton skin tone and lemon yellow. The intended result was a nice golden orange according to the mixing chart. That is definitely not what I ended up with!

It's not a bad color, and it actually may make an appearance for another project I have in mind, but it definitely wasn't what I had been going for!

This experiment validate my hunch that I would need to test all my dye colors before starting a big project, so I forged ahead and did a bunch more tests.

All the colors came out really pretty, but most of them didn't come out as intended. I did end up with the color formulas I wanted for my first project though!
