that would have been my natural response in my current state of mind! but I sort of got (very kindly) pressganged into helping out by the friend's parents I'm staying with, and though I was still a huge ball of anxiety at every knock at the door (so much interaction) I did also get to see some very adorable very tiny pumpkins, so

I’m not sure I see your point about thrift stores. I mean, I don’t think they solve the problem, but the point is that you’re reusing an already-paid-for garment instead of paying for *another* one, so the “already been paid” thing seems off

no you're right about that sorry i didn't quite think that bit through

it's more like. the specific incidence of "i am shopping at a thrift store because I cannot afford market prices, here is a shirt by This Company that is conveniently cheap, i buy it" is not a More Ethical Choice because it is not preventing a sale

but yeah you're right about like "i want this article of clothing but i'd rather buy it used than buy a new one" although i'd still argue that it's ethically insignificant other than to make the person in question feel better about themself
