January 26, 2017 (Day 7 - In Which the White House Leaks, Mexico Cancels Our Date, and the State Department Quits)
Dear Diary, today in the sh*t-blizzard known as the Trump “Presidency”...
The American People celebrated the end of Trump’s first week in office. Only 207 to go! Wooooot! “Celebrated” probably isn’t the right word, though, because there has been precious little celebrating done by anyone other than the roughly 27% of voters who somehow managed to overcome their misgivings about The Donald’s character, ethics, intellect, motives, truthfulness, morality, maturity, business interests, Russian connections and basic mental stability, in order to inflict him on the country and the world at large. His approval ratings have sunk even lower than when he took office. (Who knew that was possible?) A strong odor of of regret is already wafting up from panicked Trump voters as they realize they’ll likely lose their health insurance, and probably their Medicaid, and possibly even their lives before this is over, so I’d say his dedicated base is probably more in the range of 10-20% of voters (and that’s being generous). It doesn’t exactly constitute the “mandate” that Minister of Propaganda Kellyanne Conjob likes to pretend it does. The Washington Post ran a piece titled “Trump’s erratic first week was among the most alarming in history” which (quite correctly) identified Trump’s “erratic, even bizarre, behavior” as the common thread connecting seven straight days of chaos. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) let it drop to the Post that legislation requiring Presidents to undergo mental health examinations would not be dismissed out of hand, should it come before Congress.
In a bit of unexpected Palace Intrigue, a purportedly disillusioned mid-level Republican White House staffer set up a Twitter account to Tweet his (or her?) disappointment with the chaotic and “clueless” new administration. The prose leaves something to be desired (”Donald Trump and most of his staff are nuts!”) but the substance seems to corroborate other reliable reports of general confusion, disorganization, dissent and tension between Trump’s aids. @WhiteHouseLeaks figures Reince Priebus won’t “last long” and points out that Trump “can’t stay [on] message.” Thanks for that, Captain Obvious...tell us something we don’t know.
After Donald Trump issued an executive order yesterday to get the ball rolling on The Wall of American Greatness That Mexico Will Definitely Pay For, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto responded with a statement in Spanish which translated roughly into: “How many effing times do I have to tell you that we are not paying for that damned wall!?” Pursuant to this rebuff, Trump and his brain trust proposed a 20% tariff be added to all Mexican imports. Eventually, America was assured, this “tariff on Mexican goods” would pay them back for the $12-$15 billion they’d be forced to front for the building of the Taj MaWall. It didn’t take long for someone to realize that a tariff would simply increase the prices American consumers paid for Mexican goods. Gosh-darn, every which way you turn this thing, you just keep coming back to the inevitable conclusion that middle and lower income Americans will be footing the bill for that wall. America, The Wall is nothing but a useless monument(1) to a foolish man, and he’s suckering you into paying for it.
Miffed by the wall business and subsequent goading Tweets from Trump, Peña Nieto expressed his displeasure by canceling a US visit. In less than a week we’ve managed to completely alienate our southern neighbor. So much for The Great Negotiator.
In other news, as Comrade Tillerson took the helm of the State Department, the senior administrative team resigned en masse. Predictably, Trump’s propagandists tried to frame the story as “They’re Fired!”. Of course they were. Because nobody ever quits on The Donald.
