"Convicts Testify They Were Offered Bribes," Winnipeg Tribune. April 11, 1940. Page 23. --- [Special to The Winnipeg Tribune] MINNEDOSA, April 11. - Two inmates of Brandon gaol, as crown witnesses, testified here Wednesday that they had been offered $2,000 by Alex Poroznuk alias Kaest to take the rap for him on two charges of robbery.
Poroznuk, on trial at the spring assizes which opened Tuesday before Mr. Justice Dysart, is charged with two robberies at Elphinstone last October 14, along with John Barnett. Barnett's case has been put over to the fall assizes as he is charged with the murder of Constable John McDonald in Winnipeg last month.
Two of 11 witnesses called by the crown prosecutor, G. A. Eakins, K.C., of Minnedosa, the convicts in cross-examination by A. J. Stringer, defense counsel, admitted they had criminal records for safe-cracking, breaking and entering.
Stopped By R.C.M.P. "The indictment against Poroznuk alleges that on the morning of October 14, he and Barnett forced entry to the garage at Elphinstone owned by Walter Dufrat, broke open the safe and stole $3,269.93 belonging to the Manitoba Pool Elevators Ltd.
Dufrat in giving evidence said as pay for for the pool he kept the money for cashing grain tickets. He said the safe had been smashed pen with crowbars and a sledge hammer.
Crown evidence showed Poroznuk and Barnett were stopped on the night of the robbery two miles east of Sandy Lake on the Russell- Clear Lake highway by the R.C.M.P. night patrol. After questioning they told Constables Skovill and Walker of the Shoal Lake detachment that they had intended to go to Poroznuk's home in Calder, Sask., but after car trouble a few miles west of Elphinstone, they turned back to Winnipeg. They were allowed to proceed.
Later they were accosted by Constables McKaysoff and Stillborn of the Minnedosa detachment, five miles west of Minnedosa, and taken to Minnedosa as the constables were not satisfied with their stories. Arriving in the town and learning of the robberies at Elphinstone the R.C.M.P. went back to the spot where they had stopped the men, and after extensive searching found over $1,000 rolled up in a cap and sweater on the side of the highway.
Marked Bills Found In the roll was found $80 in bills which had been marked by Dufrat. The marked bills were five ones, five fives, and five to. The numbers on the bills com responded with the numbers taken down by Dufrat on a memorandum and placed in his safe.
Evidence produced by Constable Bayfield Wednesday evening led to the production of a tomato can found in the car of the accused with the label torn off. Bayfield produced a label which he found near the scene of the robbery and corresponded exactly with the tears on the can.
The defense counsel intimated at the adjournment Wednesday night that he will call four or five witnesses when court resumes today. It is expected the case will go to jury late tonight.
