minthe, a naiad nymph associated with the river cocytus. beloved by hades, king of the underworld. minthe boasted of hades' love, jealousy and envy of his wife, persphone, fueling rage and was transformed into a mint plant by either his wife persephone or demeter. the mint was used in ancient funerary rites to mask the smell of the dead and so came to be regarded as a sacred plant of hades.
