if you had to try to pin point when your desire to be someone’s center of attention was pushed to the forefront, you’d say at birth. when you were born there were other children still to take care of, and meager means meant there wasn’t much time to sit and dote on one child . . . or so you thought. from when you were old enough to observe you realized there was a favorite, and it wasn’t you. you had a sister that was more like a mom to you —— the one that picked you up when you toddled along too fast and fell, the one that held you when you cried when you scraped your knee the first time from running too fast. she quickly became who you went to seek out when you had good news, learning all too early the tired congratulations from your parents’ wouldn’t do. you needed enthusiasm and she gave it to you, whereas your other sister you were sure couldn’t stand you. you presented your gold stars, and good grades to sage ; followed along after her until you were too old to do so, interests turning to sports and friends as opposed to following an older sibling.
you played basketball in school —— and you were good. how many times you’d had heaps of praise, cheers of your name, fawning admiration over you just putting a ball in a basket. colleges scouted you, talks of going into a professional league once you were old enough to travel, you did. you looked at your coaches as your new parents, frequent fights with your own resulting in a frosty relationship that you still hold. you cherished those relationships so much so that the pressure on your shoulders, the screaming, the punishments you thought were normal. you never thought anything of it, not understanding why if you ever talked about it people gave odd looks and asked concerned questions. you just saw it as a means of a way to get the attention you so desperately craved, and a way out. resentment towards many members of your family meant that when you got a scholarship to a school far far away from then, you left and didn’t really look back. your oldest sister, the one you always wanted to be under, you never lost contact with. she knew of all of your endeavors, got sent excited texts when something happened, but when you got hurt you basically fell from the face of the earth.
a championship game, one that was to be your finest work and your sure shot into the league found you on the floor, bone splintered and broken but with you too shocked to feel the pain or understand why there had been a sudden hush in a crowd of hundreds of spectators. surgeries, physical therapy, and the inevitable “ we don’t think you’ll ever play again ” sent you into a numbness that, even a year later, hasn’t been completely shaken off. you lost time after that. days, weeks, and months gone by that if someone asked about you wouldn’t ever be able to truthfully say what had happened. suggestions of going back home, defeated, were met with disgust, winding up on magnetic island seeking the comfort of the only comfort that had been stable since your childhood. it’s been a year now and many are more likely to see a grin on your face than the scowl you’d arrived with, but there are occasions where you lose time, seemingly shaking yourself out of funks when months have already gone by.
tldr : ry is a london sibling, and a former athlete that had plans to go professional but an injury took him out of the game for good. he’s closest to sage, working on his relationship with poppy, and loves and adores scarlet. he’s normally charming, goofing off and goofy, but embodies minthe’s traits of jealousy and insecurity. he’s been clinically diagnosed with depression and when he feels like he’s under a lot of pressure, he will dissociate. the only people that know about this are his roommate ( wc on the main ) and sage.
