4 глава "Brainchild" доступна для чтения на Boosty

"I didn't think that the inside of a severed neck would look a lot like sliced cabbage. . ." (Madeleine to Jean Baptiste)
Jean-Baptiste almost chuckled at the comparison. Madeleine-Claude-Gabrielle seemed to manage to have a sense of humor after all.
"Well, there are rigid parts and softer tissue. It looks more visible now that most of the blood is gone, but a fresh severed neck...barely anything is visible."
Girl had some wit, or maybe she was just indifferently cold in an innocent may. Either way worked.
“You requested for me, father?” (Madeleine)
With glassy eyes, he took a look at his daughter, nervously standing at the door. "Yes. Come on in, Claude."
He allowed her to enter his study. He had to say it to her.
"We had to arrange your marriage to Pierre Hérisson. It's your hand against the family post. It would be this January. Until then, I would ask of you to assist at dissections. This might create trouble with your grandmother, it would probably be wiser for you to learn how to extract human fat before getting married. He's quite poorer, and thus he would need someone who could help him with that task. As much as I dislike going against my mother's wishes, blind obedience would certainly not help."
Why Marie-Josèphe’s character design as a little girl is so great...And shows research
There is this Rogis family photo, which shows the wedding photo of a real-life family of executioner. The girls and women of the family are clad in very lacy, frilly dresses and have this very intense, deadly stare, sometimes combined with a permanent frown, a feature very common for many native French people. A mixture of poor lighting and perhaps naturally intense dark circle also harshened their gaze.
Here, you can see that Marie also has a very intense stare and the bone structure around the eyes is very well-defined and the shading does simply a certain amount of dark circles. The look is kept, but with a robe à la française as opposed to a lingerie dress and a hairstyle which caters to modern sensibilities.
The bold lip could also be a reference to the makeup worn by some Sukeban.
Anyways, I do love absolutely love this look, and the contrast between the soft frills and the deadly stare.
Many of Marie-Josèphe’s natural features such as the unhealthy complexion and blond hair matches many stereotypes about female torturers going on in French literature of the XIX and XXth century, which saw the aventment of a certain ideology. Many in Europe had a certain erotic fascination with the female nazi officers, such as Irma Grese. In the XIXth century, the erotic wrighter Leopold von Sacher-Masoch who had a fascination for sadistic women and Victor Hugo, who often vilified the figure of the executioner and his relatives in his writings. Some plays also mentioned about “beautiful bourrelles”, blonds with blue eyes. We also have have older examples of “bourrelles” with blond hair, simply because the first executioner dynasty, around the XIIIth century was of Norse origins, and many in fact depicted the executioner with nordic features such as unhealthily red or pale complexion and red hair, the eyes either bloodshot or presenting ocular albinism.
In short, this first design for our beautiful fille fatale clearly shows Sakamoto-sensei did his research.
Innocent manga’s torture instruments
In chronological order:
The chair chair to tie up people:
I love the attention to detail. One thing that is noticeable immediately is the chair has things to restrain the torso, the knees and the legs. The background of the pannel is a lovely detail, showing this place was not originally built to be a torture chamber. If it would, it would have architectural elements to accommodate a strappado, which the room here clearly does not. On the other pannels, it is shown to be quite close to the wall, but not on the wall and it is not nailed to the ground. The room is also equipped with what seems to be a chamber pot. The proportions also make it pervertible as a spanking chair for OTK. It’s functional. Only worry would be if the victim can probably thrash hard enough to tip the chair, since it isn’t affixed to the ground. However, with the amount of brainwashing they do, it would probably counter this issue.
Next...
I think this is a strappado, although because probably the sealing isn’t high enough to use it to full effect, it has been repurposed as an immobilizing device.
The branding irons here are perfect.
We have another spiked collar, I think Subyss just wants to show his collection at this point, what looks like ferulas, an axe, a rapier and I think this is a sword of justice. We also have a rectangular metal spoon. Some bizarre bird cage is here on top. Okay, I think Subyss might deal with juvenile delinquants from time to time and cannot be bothered with taking them off the wall I guess. However, WTF the magistrates would store their self-defense weapons in the torture chamber, that would remain a mystery.
Damien’s restrain bed is perfect to historical depictions and functional.
We have here a chastity belt, a knee breaker, I think a bridal scold and a hammer. As well as WTF items that are decorative and meant to scare the prisonnier, although here I doubt they are for that as Damien probably saw them a billion times already.
I think these are thumbscrews, manacles and spiked collars. They look...Barely visible.
Witch pricker. Perfectly simple and functional.
Is that what I think it is?
Subyss displays someone’s chastity belt. It’s canon. The only question left is how Subyss acquired this. Did he just purchasted it for himself to put on display or did he “borrow” it from a woman...
Although, it does have plenty of dark comedy potential if it is the second option.
