He sat at the end of the tiny couch in his living room. His mother sat on the ground at the coffee table, reading glasses perched on her nose as she looked through mail. It wasn't often that she had a day off, but today was one of those days.
His father sat at the other end of the couch, his phone in his hand as he aimlessly scrolled, probably on Facebook.
Namgyu had gotten to the living room before both of them had or else he would definitely not be sitting there with them with the news playing. His father loved to watch the news and complain about everything shown, it was a burden whenever it was 6 o'clock. Namgyu didn't have work that night, a slight shocker but he was practically scheduled the rest of the week. Their family cat sat perched on the same window Namgyu now found himself staring out.
The broadcast had mostly been boring things, the weather for the rest of August, politics and things that Namgyu hadn't cared about in the slightest. He had just wanted to watch some cartoons, his parents always ruined his time. The anchorman then began a story of a pride mural getting defaced in the city a few hours away, the place that Namgyu had ever only gone to once because it's too expensive to go there. He had remembered his father coming home with pockets full and took them out on a shopping spree, a week later he sold the toys Namgyu and his siblings had bought to pay the bills.
Namgyu glanced at the screen ever so slightly, just enough to see the defaced mural and not gain his father's attention. He didn't look because he found the news interesting but because he knew his father would most likely make a comment, one he'd heard a few times before.
"Eh, serves them right," Deoksu mumbled, not looking up from his phone. Namgyu looked back toward the cat, the way his head rested so softly on his paws. "Ruining the city with their queer bullshit."
Namgyu didn't look away from the cat, the beautiful creature, living without a care in the world, without any issues. He lifted his phone up, the screen waking with the movement. He read Thanos' last text which was followed by many more. His mother lit a cigarette as she shifted through the mail, opening a fresh envelope, the cigarette hanging from her lips. She ripped the top of the envelope, probably ripping at least a little bit of the letter with her stained yellow cigarette fingers.
"How do you figure?" Minyeo asked, taking the cigarette from her lips, pinching it between her pointer and middle fingers.
"Everywhere you go, you see those fags. They keep shoving that shit down our throats. Serves them right to have that happen," Deoksu replied, his fingers swiping aimlessly on his phone screen. "Don't be going soft, Nyeo, that's what they want. More sympathy to take our taxes."
Namgyu rolled his eyes, his cheek resting in his palm. Namgyu had never been the type to argue toward his dad, despite seeming like he would. He was raised to respect his parents, surprisingly so considering they never respected each other or their children. If asked about the topic, which he rarely ever was, he would just nod to what his dad was saying, living a double life without verbal communication. His older brother was more the one to 'disrespect' their parents, to talk out of turn and debate whatever they were saying.
Hakkun had always just said that he cares for everyone, never seeing a reason to hate. Namgyu had always thought it was because Deoksu would call him slurs which made him be so vocal about his political stands and love all attitude. However, Hakkun wasn't home at the moment, just Namgyu was in a space that felt so tense that made him want to die.
"What do you mean take our taxes?" Minyeo asked, inhaling her cigarette between her chapped lips, the room smelling strongly of it. Deoksu waved her off, as if not having proof or energy to explain it to her.
The news showed the city's mayor and such talking about the issue and before the mayor could even get his words out, Deoksu switched the television off, tossing the remote toward Namgyu, it hitting his leg softly. Deoksu stood, his phone turned off as he let out that 'I'm so ancient' groan. He took the cigarette from his wife's mouth, stealing it for himself and earning a hard slap on the leg from her. Not a playful slap, an intended to hurt slap. Deoksu looked over to her as he walked, it was a sharp glare and Namgyu didn't look at the exchange for long.
"Don't fucking hit me," Deoksu spoke, his voice just as tight as his stance. Minyeo glared up at him, the same gaze he gave her. Namgyu took that as his sign to leave. He'd seen many of their altercations before and even as he aged, he'd done what he always did when they did this, walk away.
He climbed the stairs to his room, closing his door gently but swiftly before blaring music from his phone, the song mingling with the yelling from his parents downstairs. He swiped through apps, before entering the unread messages from Thanos.

Thanos :)
bet you wish you were here rn huh 😏
7:15 pm
Namgyu rolled his eyes, covering his ears before face planting into his bed. He wasn't a child, he wasn't sensitive to the sound of his parents fighting, it was more out of annoyance, out of not being able to go one day without hearing them fight and hit each other.
Today had been surprisingly good too. His mom and dad were both home for most of the day, and they only just began to fight around seven, a record for them. He turned his head, looking out the window as Maejor began to play through his speakers. The sky was so cloudy, rain threatening to fall with the changing of fall soon to come.
He opened his phone again.
Namgyu
I'm coming over
7:34 pm
Thanos :)
For me or the pizza?
7:34 pm
Namgyu
You
7:35 pm
He hadn't bothered to say it was because that pizza looked like the best thing he could have right now, not wanting to read Thanos' gross banter about it. He turned his music off, pulling his window open and hanging out before jumping down to the bushes beneath.
