the next game was approaching, and you hoped that he would choose you.

warnings: canon death, mentions of death, s1 plot change for this fic

you sit there in the white crowded room as the rules are announced in that monotone voice you’ve come to dread. 

every player must pick a partner, confirm it with a handshake, and step into the next round together. you feel your heart pounding as you glance over at sangwoo, the one person who’s kept you safe through the horrors of these games…even during lights out. 

since he was your partner of two years, even before the horrors of this game, you expect him to choose you without a moment’s hesitation.

however, you see him. sangwoo's eyes barely scan the room before locking onto ali. without missing a beat, he extends his hand, and offers to be ali’s partner. you watch in silence, the shock and betrayal coursing through you. ali looks back at you, wondering why sangwoo didn’t choose you either. you looked away in shame, what did i do wrong? why didn’t he even glance my way? 

“i thought we were partners… i trusted him to have my back.” your mind spins.

from across the room, ni-nyeo sidles up to you, her tone laced with a mix of sympathy and something darker…an urge for revenge.  

“hey, if you really want to get back at him, you should pair up with me. we could show him what he’s missing.  you know, the same way i can show him too.”

she nods over at deok-su.

the older woman’s words prick at you, but you recoil at the thought. you remember all too well how she made her move on sangwoo, your man, after the tug of war game, and the mere idea makes you shudder. 

you say nothing. your silence speaks volumes as you watch ni-nyeo get paired up with someone else, her opportunity for vengeance slipping away like the warmth you once felt when sangwoo was by your side.

the room is filled with uneasy chatter as groups form, and you realize you’re the only one left. you could've been paired up with that doctor, but he made some stupid mistake that got him killed. 

a cold dread fills you…are the guards going to punish you for being the odd one out? before you can dwell on it too long, four guards appear and silently usher you away through dim hallways and creaking stairs. 

sangwoo didn’t look back at you as he lead ali to the next game, what the fuck?

each step echoes the pounding of your heart, and even now, terror screams in your mind.

in one of the sparse, sterile dorm rooms, a manager guard stops before you, his tone unexpectedly matter-of-fact.

“player 234, since you weren’t chosen by another player for the next game, you get to sit this round out.” 

you blink in disbelief, the simple word “sit” feeling like an exile from the only fight you thought you were in. with no chance to prove yourself, you’re led back into the dorm, left alone with your spiraling thoughts.

the beds are rearranged, you’ve noticed. you walked towards one of them and sat down. you try to process what just happened. however, one of the square guards comes and places a meal is placed before you…a modest portion of food, water, and a side of kimchi. 

this is strange. however, you get to eat in peace. the guards’ presence is distant now, their footsteps fading away into the corridor as you sink into solitude. the room is silent except for the low hum of the building, and your mind replays every moment.

did sangwoo really think i was weak? did he believe that being with a woman meant i’d be the one to get him killed?  

the thought stings like a bitter accusation. 

you remember how sangwoo’s intuition had always been razor-sharp in your relatuonship. you always let him take the lead, he was super smart and knew things that most didn’t. he had a calculated coldness that once made you feel secure now seem like a betrayal. 

maybe he sensed something in you that he couldn’t risk… something that might bring both of you down.

in the stillness of the dorm, your inner voice grows louder, echoing the questions you dare not ask aloud. you think of sangwoo’s steady presence during lights out, his calm in the chaos. yet now, his decision to pair with ali, his refusal to even look in your direction, shatters that image. 

you wonder if there was a message behind his actions…a gut feeling, a premonition of doom if you were together.

however, gi hun, sangwoo’s best friend noticed that too. 

sangwoo didn’t chose you or him, the two closest people to him in these games. 

did the SNU graduate know something?

as you nibble on your meal back in the dorms, every bite tastes of regret and sorrow. you’re left alone to wonder if sangwoo’s choice was a calculated move to protect both of you, or a callous dismissal that cuts deeper than any physical blow. 

the room, the food, even the soft clatter of distant footsteps…all become reminders of a partnership lost and the cruel reality of the games that might kill you if you are not the last one standing.

later on, maybe an hour later.. you couldn’t tell based off of the lack of clocks in this place… you find yourself looking ahead at the surviving players of the game that you missed out on, luckily.

everyone was shocked, some like sae-byeok relieved, as they take in your unexpected presence. in fact, sae byeok is the first to reach you, her eyes dull but showed gratitude. 

"wha- how are you-?” she says softly, her voice trembling with relief. you manage a small nod, still trying to process how the guards spared you. 

deok su stands back with that stupid wry smile, unable to hide his sarcasm while everyone else watches you with shock, some jealous that you didn’t have to play a game. 

"so, you weren’t shot by those guards, huh?" he teases, prompting you to explain in a quiet tone, "no, they just carried me back and made sure i ate. i guess even they can be… considerate sometimes." the remark hangs in the air, a bittersweet reminder of the twisted guards under those shaped masks.

however, sangwoo steps forward from the rest of the players around him. your fiance's exhausted expression softens as he sees you alive. the man’s relief is palpable, though a shadow of sorrow clouds his eyes. 

you are the love of his life, his baby, his only sunshine in this endless night of despair. yet there is a distance in his gaze, a guarded pain that makes your heart sink. 

you take a hesitant step back, the hurt and betrayal already raw from the last game.

"please, try to understand… i had to make a choice that i felt was right. i thought it was too risky to pair up with you, and I ended up being right..."

your voice wavers as you ask, "b-but why?" 

the question trembles on your lips, heavy with both longing and despair. sangwoo falls to his knees before you, his eyes pleading for forgiveness. 

"we played the marbles game this time, and i had to be smart about it. ali—" he hesitates, swallowing hard, "ali lost. it was the only way to keep you safe. i would never sacrifice you, not for anything." his tone is desperate, each word laced with regret.

behind him, gi-hun stands silently, a few feet away. the quiet nod speaks volumes, affirming that sangwoo's decision wasn't a callous rejection but a calculated measure to protect you both. 

tears well in your eyes as you reach out, your hand trembling, and you whisper, "it's okay… i-i-ill get over it. i know you did what you thought was best." your voice breaks with sorrow and exhaustion, a mix of relief and the overwhelming desire to escape it all. 

you start to cry, wishing desperately for a way out of this nightmare.

sangwoo, still on his knees, pulls you into a tight embrace. 

"i promise, i would never let anything happen to you," he says, his voice raw and sincere as he inhales your scent, trying to imprint this moment of fragile reconciliation into his memory. the warmth of his embrace is the only solace you have right now, a small island of safety in a sea of betrayal and fear.

you cling to sangwoo, the weight of every lost life and every sacrificed bond presses down on you both. especially ali.

to you, ali simply lost the marbles game. however, sangwoo knows the truth. he would’ve never forgiven himself if he had to do that to you.

as flawed as her character was she's just so interesting man. Is she fucked up? oh yeah, lol. Not a good person either. But that makes her so interesting to me, idk, I love a good morally grey character you can both despise for their actions & appreciate.

watching her and Deok Su was just an interesting study of characters- and she deserved what she did in the end, lol

also since I refuse to draw humans like 90% of the time I just made them fursonas, mi-nyeo's a hyena and deok su a water buffalo because it oddly fit him :]

My squid game s1 favorites (and a brief description on why)

Deok-su is a dumbass, he doesn’t know how to fight (he fights with pure strength, not real fighting), strategy isn’t his thing. He gets through the games on strength and luck (and intimidation). Also he’s hot.

Sang-woo is smart, he’s ruthless, he’s a little bitch basically, but also he’s understandable given the amount of money at stake. Betraying Gi-hun like that during dalgona is diabolical though. Also, he’s hot.

Mi-nyeo is so funny, especially during the bathroom scene she had me sit there for a whole ass minute in a mixture of contemplating and laughing my ass off. And I feel so bad for the triangle gaurd. Justice for Mi-nyeo from Deok-su. Also, she’s hot.

Ali is so sweet, he uses his strength to protect others, he’ll do anything for his family, and even his little squid game family, and he sees the best in people. He’s one of the biggest minorities in Korea, but he (kind of) overcomes that with his squid game friends. Also, he’s hot.

Regressor! Nam-gyu w/ Caregivers! Deok-su & Mi-nyeo Headcanons

A/N: Decided to write these because I’ve been thinking a lot about these three lately. Will work on requests soon though, but I’m not sure when.

•Surprisingly, Deok-su and Mi-nyeo are very caring and loving caregivers towards Nam-gyu. They love him, that’s their baby.

•Nam-gyu loves both of his caregivers obviously, but he’s definitely a mama’s boy. He’ll usually go to Mi-nyeo when he wants to be comforted and cuddled with. Deok-su’s the one he’ll go to when he wants to play.

•In Mi-nyeo’s eyes, Nam-gyu can do absolutely no wrong. Deok-su will call him out for something (probably stealing something of his or coloring on important papers) and Nam-gyu will run to Mi-nyeo and cling to her so she’ll baby and coddle him. She always does while telling Deok-su that whatever Nam-gyu did isn’t a big deal and that he’s just a baby so he doesn’t know any better (he most likely knows better..)

•Nam-gyu has his own room, but it’s always a 50/50 chance he’ll sleep in his room. Baby Nam-gyu typically will because his bed has gates that get pulled up, turning his bed into a crib, and he really likes his crib so he’ll usually sleep in his room. Toddler Nam-gyu will often go to Mi-nyeo and Deok-su’s room at some point and climb into bed with them because he doesn’t want to sleep alone.

•Mi-nyeo is always dressing Nam-gyu up in the cutest outfits and styling his hair. Deok-su thinks it’s kind of ridiculous because they aren’t going anywhere, so he doesn’t think Nam-gyu needs to be all dressed up if they’re just staying home. But as long as the outfit’s comfortable, Nam-gyu doesn’t care at all.

•Mi-nyeo will do anything for Nam-gyu, except when it comes to diaper changes. She won’t change him, unless Deok-su isn’t home since she’s obviously not going to make him wait to be changed. Though, when Deok-su is home, Mi-nyeo immediately hands Nam-gyu to him when he needs to be changed.

•Deok-su is also the one who typically gives Nam-gyu a bath because he will splash water everywhere. Mi-nyeo gives him a bath if he’s baby or newborn regressed, since then he’s calm during his bath. But toddler Nam-gyu splashes and makes a huge mess. Deok-su is always soaked after Nam-gyu gets a bath.

•When baby Nam-gyu is in the stage where he’s showing signs of speaking soon, Mi-nyeo and Deok-su have competitions on whose name he can say first. He usually says “Mama” first but he has said “Dada” first as well. He’s also said random words first too, such as “No”, “Hi”, and “Kitty”.

•Nam-gyu and Deok-su play fight with each other, and Mi-nyeo hates when they do that because she’s always scared Nam-gyu’s going to get hurt. She constantly yells at Deok-su to be careful and gentle with him, despite him being the one losing since he’s not using his full strength on Nam-gyu but Nam-gyu is using his full strength on him.

•Either Mi-nyeo or Deok-su need to nap with Nam-gyu because he refuses to nap without at least one of them. Mi-nyeo typically is the one who naps with him, she doesn’t like being without her baby for too long, so she’ll nap with him.

•When Nam-gyu needs to be bottle fed, he has a preference for Mi-nyeo feeding him. She rocks him and hums to him while she feeds him, it’s very comforting and soothing for him.

•Nam-gyu often interrupts Deok-su’s gang meetings. Everyone’s used to it at this point, it’s shocking if Nam-gyu doesn’t interrupt them. He’ll walk into the room, pajamas on, blankie in his hands, and his pacifier in his mouth as he quickly toddles over to Deok-su and sits on his lap. Nam-gyu typically ends up falling asleep during the meeting, which is around the time Mi-nyeo will come to get him.

•Deok-su and Mi-nyeo both have a ton of pictures of Nam-gyu on their phones because Nam-gyu likes to steal their phones and take pictures of himself. Whenever they open their camera roll, they always see like fifty new pictures of Nam-gyu that all look the same or very similar because he rarely changes the angle or his facial expression.
