hog is like an ogre, he has layers
Roadhog watches the cowboy for a moment.
He doesn't get it.
Or, at least, he pretends not to.
"...like an onion." he then corrects.
several photographs sit proudly in their frames upon strike commander morrison’s desk: a blond haired, blue eyed boy with strawberries smeared across his lips and cheeks, slumped against his father’s side. that same child barely on the cusp of adulthood, struggling against a friend’s fist digging into his hair, a part of a group of teenagers grinning gleefully atop a bale of hay. and the boy, now in the military, dressed in uniform next to a handsome man with brown hair.
it’s not as though jack makes any effort to hide himself from his subordinates: when your work is as demanding as it is, you become married to it, as well as individuals similarly involved. still, he doesn’t take to the shifty look in cole cassidy’s eye as the newly christened blackwatch agent digs his figurative nose into just about every corner of the room.
a healthy dose of curiosity is one thing, but jack takes note of the way the boy’s ( because he IS a boy, no more than a pup ) eyes sweep his surroundings as though searching for something. it’s when a photo is taken from his desk for a second look that he finally speaks up.
“ me and my ex, ” he provides helpfully, leaning against the wall to keep a better eye on the cowboy’s actions, arms crossed across his chest. even if their broken relationship has had time to heal into an unsteady friendship, it still stings to speak of it. “ you done looking through my office ? trust me, i’m not that interesting. ”

@miqhtyfine asked:
❛ died and came back as a cowboy, i call that reintarnation. ❜ @ mercy
The joke catches Angela off-guard, the doctor momentarily pausing her paperwork to fight back a laugh. She hadn’t noticed that Cole had woken up after receiving a knock to the head that she’d been monitoring him for, but his joke had certainly caught her attention.
“‘Died’ is a bit of an exaggeration, don’t you think?” She retorts, scooting over on her chair to give his shoulder a friendly pat, a warm smile upon her features. “It’s good to have you back, cowboy. How do you feel? None the worse for your reintarnation, I hope?” She withdraws her hand then to give him some space, standing up to place her clipboard on the nearby table.
in spite of the long journey they have endured, salamence remains energetic as she swoops down from her place in the skies, coming in for a smooth landing along the grasses below. her trainer, perched between the beginnings of her powerful wings, gives his pokemon an encouraging pat against her neck as they approach their destination. “ excellent job, ” he hums, removing thick goggles from his eyes as salamence’s claws scrape the earth. vocal response to praise comes in the form of a loud roar, though subdued enough to avoid startling the pokemon who watch their landing with curious eyes.
“ it’s nice to see so many familiar faces ! ” certainly not above comfortable friendliness with pokemon, particularly with the many mareep and wooloo which call this ranch home, hanzo takes a moment to smooth a hand across the heads which crowd around him once he has firmly planted two feet on the ground. beside him, salamence greets them with a similar affection, careful not to injure the frailer pokemon as she noses against their sides and chatters gently. once he’s sure they have had enough of his incessant petting, hanzo draws back to look about the fields. “ where is your trainer ? ” there is no response but bleating, which was about what hanzo had expected.
well, if the man isn’t out in the fields, it’s no stretch of the imagination to expect him to be within his home. hanzo recalls bei into her pokeball, promising treats for her hard work once the opportunity arises, and makes for the building. he had warned cassidy of his arrival ahead of time, but had been unable to foresee arriving so late in the evening, and so he chooses to firmly knock his knuckles against the door instead of rudely barging in once he finally arrives at the building.
as the door creaks open, hanzo offers a nod of greeting, lips quirking up into a tired smile. “ it is good to see you, cassidy. my apologies, i did not expect the flight back to sinnoh to take so long. ”

@miqhtyfine, from here :)
“ Oh — yeah, sure is, or was a few minutes ago, ” caught off guard with his own line and an attempt at his accent, the cowboy smirks and rests his hands on his hips. Finally, a worthy opponent. “ Now that Halloween’s over, it’s Christmas time! ” Probably a bit too early to celebrate, is it not? Does Cole give a damn about that? Absolutely not. “ Got any Christmas wishes? I’ll track Santa down n’ get him to gift ya anythin’ ya like. ”
any hopes of finishing the remainder of his book forgotten, attention is fully given to the taller man as hanzo pinches the paperback shut. “ christmas time ? cassidy, it is november. ” raising an incredulous brow, it takes him but a moment to scoff at the other man’s enthusiasm, if only in the spirit of their banter. amused, impassive stare turns into a smile at the offer extended to him.
“ i do not think santa claus can gift me what i TRULY desire. though, you are certainly welcome to put in a good word for me. ”
“ Hey Hanny, do you know what time it is? ”
long past the point of griping about cole’s insistence on weaponizing nicknames, hanzo’s gaze rises from where he has been squinting at the pages of his book to eye the cowboy warily. his first instinct is to glance briefly at the flat clock fitted against the wall, a grumble of quiet japanese betraying this moment of irritation. lips part in the beginnings of a time, only to draw into a thin line when he realizes a straight answer is not what the other man is looking for.
“ let me guess [ ... ] it is high noon ? ” amused, hanzo cannot help the imitation of cassidy’s southern drawl that creeps into his words.
The cowboy is dressed up as a demon hunter — nothing new in that department — and carrying a pumpkin-themed plastic bucket. With a mischievous smile, he raises it before saying “Trick or treat! Share your candy or prepare for yeehawnt! ”
" You know you don't have to go through all that for candy, Cole. "
Considering how the day's been, it was nice to see someone stop by. Makes up for the fact she had to work on one of her favorite holidays. Because of his luck he earns a little less than half of the bowl she had sat on her desk. The rest is for her whoever else decides to visit before her shift ends. Seems she wants to keep the company somewhat, because she hadn't stopped prattling on about her day from the moment he made his presence known. By the time she realized what she was doing, 20 minutes had passed and Angela was leading the poor cowboy across the room and out the door.
" Terribly sorry for taking up your time, go on now before I bore you for another half hour. "
" Incredible costume, by the way! If you see anyone else while out tonight, tell them I said hi! "
