Despite her best efforts, it’s difficult not to phrase the question in a way that doesn’t feel potentially barbed. Not that he was all that worried about her becoming upset with him in particular– but rather that it may, in fact, simply upset her. After all, he’s more than well aware of her own prior commitments, and goes to great lengths to remind himself that he is under no entitlement to her time or attention regardless of how lonesome he becomes… Anyone could tell that she was doing the very best she could for someone like him.
But on the other hand…. she expects him to be honest…
