My Softie for Mirabel

I haven't made anything crochet in some time but couldn't resist doing some good and making this cute little shroom™  for a kid in need, when I saw the original poster for the Softies for Mirabel initiative organised by Meet Me at Mikes.

The Mirabel Foundation assists children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug use. Softies for Mirabel is an annual handmade toy drive for the Mirabel children. Every year, crafty makers can participate by creating a softie or two - you can knit, crochet or sew a toy!

I've made these shrooms previously in miniature size but thought it may be just as cute magnified - what do you think of him? It's an original pattern of mine too! I hope a darling kid treats him right and becomes his new best friend.

And if you happen to live or be in Melbourne at the moment, why don't you go check out all the toys that were sent in! They will be on display at CAE Infoshop, 44 Degraves Street Melbourne from December 1-15. That means it's on right now, hurry!

We last wrote about Necker Island and Richard Branson and this week I am writing about the incredible Jane Rowe who started work at the mail room of Virgin Records – small world!!

Jane founded the Mirabel Foundation - an awesome organisation working with children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug misuse.

They are working with over 1,100 children this year and shockingly seeing an average four new children each week.  Their annual budget is $2.5 million yet the government only funds 14% of this … with a tiny team of 15 they raise over $2 million. Just amazing.  

But again I left feeling sad … Jane is spending too much of her time fundraising as opposed to working directly with the young people at Mirabel … we could never do enough for Jane and Mirabel.
