thoughts on the reception to angelic kitty miracle chan
i think it's massively blown out of proportion, but at the same time, i understand it. right now, a lot of trans women are extremely scared, they're often seen as fetishists and frequently told they will never be women, so when these people who are forced into a state of perpetual fight or flight see a film where someone is struggling to conform to the ideal of femininity that they've built up in their head, it's not hard to see why that fight response would be activated. they need to protect their image from those who would see them as fetishists trying to harm others, because their safety kind of rides on that image.
however, it's not really fair to the film to leave it at just that. despite how conservatives want to paint the transgender experience, trying to tear down works that depict the more painful parts of it feel more akin to wanting silence hurting people. for a lot of trans people, coming to accept yourself is a journey, and even though it may not be part of it for you specifically, for plenty of people, there is pain at realizing your body has already gone through the opposite puberty that you wanted and the effects are hardly, if at all, reversable. THIS is what angelic kitty miracle chan seems to be illustrating. the artist behind the film seems to be a self-loathing otaku with gender dysphoria they are trying to swallow, and the film seems to be them grappling with these emotions in real time. i am not just pulling this out of my ass, there are easily accessible tweets on the authors xitter that you can find where they talk about this. things along the lines of "it's no secret that all male otaku want to be the little girl", and feeling personal disgust at themself for feeling as if they are no different.
and i'm sure at this statement, you're pointing a figure at this point like "HA! see?! the author feels disgusted at themself, therefore disgust with trans women! it's transphobic, do you not see the irony in your words?!", to which i say... disgust at emotions one is feeling towards themself is vastly different than disgust one feels towards other people. disgust at oneself points towards issues that need to be worked through, as you're going to continue to carry that for some time. disgust at others makes it easier to carry prejudice as you don't need to place yourself in the shoes of others, but disgust at oneself has you in those shoes all of the time. people who possess self-loathing should be allowed to make art that processes that self-loathing.
of course, it's understandable why someone who has already accepted themselves would feel targeted as a result of this art. it's a scary world right now for trans people, especially for those in the united states. we are literally under a genocide watch for crying out loud, your emotions are not invalid, if it looks dangerous, of course you will feel scared. but sometimes, just as often as sticks can look like snakes, the opposite can be true. does that analogy make sense? angel kitty miracle-chan is a piece of harmless art, and while you don't have to like it, i hate to see the author being painted in colors that are not deserved.
a month till miracle chan (im pretty sure)
