Violet should be terrified. She should run, she should weigh how all-consuming this connection is, and how almost nothing good will ultimately come of it. And part of her mind does tell her that. Whisper its warning, nudges her senses to see it. To see Xaden's darkness right there on the surface. The utter destruction that he will leave in his wake--for her.

And yet...

Violet feels safer, more loved, more secure right now than she ever has before. With that knowledge as fact, knowing all of who and what the man before her is, it's like nothing can shake her now... Right?

❝ If you're trying to get me to abandon you right now, it's not going to work, Xaden. We've been through this already. I don't care what happens in all of this. It's always going to be you and me. And there's an answer to all of it, I know there is. Someone, somewhere, has it. We just have to find it. So you be the big bad darkness if you want, but it's not scaring me away. ❞

“ At what point do you think i'll become the wound itself and not simply the bearer? ”

Bodhi just shrugs. It's not like they don't all have their fair share of wounds. Of scars and marks that this world has given them. Some more than others, sure, but none of them--not a single one--remains completely wound-free.

❝ Maybe when there's nothing else to mark. ❞ He shifts his arms, lowering his hands and stopping the sharpening of the blade he'd been only half-doing anyway. Bodhi looks Rowan in the eyes now. ❝ We all still have parts of that can be hurt right now. Still that part--big or small, it just depends--that's undamaged. And I guess when that's gone? When everything is nothing but a wound or a scar or some fucked up reason this world is death incarnate? Then that's the point, Rowan. That is when you're no longer just bearing the wounds. ❞

“I dream of you in crimson and shadows, and I wake up gasping for air.”

Xaden's gaze is outward when she first approaches, and her words cause his shoulders to tense. Just a little, that tiny sign that he isn't able to hide. To keep from being shown. Not that he's completely sure he would have, even if it hadn't slipped out--

❝ It's been a while, I know. ❞ It's all Xaden says at first, his words so low that it's almost as if he doesn't even speak them aloud at all. Even when he turns, fastening those eyes on Rowan, dark hair falling into his eyes, his steps carrying him across the short distance between them, there remains a wall--a chasm--that separates, that keeps the words low and quiet and apart.

❝ But you're still alive, Rowan. That's the best I can offer right now. ❞
