random stuff is that i find reyna so interesting as a character in the specific context of giving her a midlife crisis. i played around with the idea a LOT a few months back when i was in a pretty shit mental place and needed to project that uncertainty and doubt somewhere.
reyna basically being cut off from her support system when jason gets kidnapped, brainwashed and later dies. she becomes aimless and joins the hunters for a while. she's outgrown camp jupiter – without jason, there's nothing really for her there. she never sees her sister often, but whenever she does, hylla always tries to convince her to join the amazons. reyna always refuses, and they always get into a fight. she finds solace when visiting percy and annabeth. but she knows she can't stay with them for too long (even though they'd love to have her, were she to only ask) – they're bonded in such a close way that nobody could match that, and they remind her of jason too much.
she tries out a bunch of jobs, getting kicked out of or quitting most of them. monsters follow her around whereever, and office life isn't really for her. every so often, her and thalia get together, but in any of the iterations, things never truly work out. they butt heads too often, and thalia's way too stubborn to admit to a wrongdoing of her own. acuses reyna of just seeing jason in her at one point. at one point, reyna goes to hotel valhalla as a visitor (mutual friends, you know the drill), and has a little fling with mallory. they never really click, and besides, it's hard to explain why you're dating someone who looks like a sixteen-year-old in your late twenties.
she tries the per ankh, but she just feels as isolated there as she does everywhere else. everywhere she goes, things just seem to be moving without her. she never really had a long enough second to plan her future when she was younger, but there was some part of her that had hoped that her and jason would share a future together. as praetors, as partners (however you wanna read that). now, she just feels distant from everyone. she doesn't know what to do with herself.
and so she moves to italy, to start again. the ancient lands. she always wanted to spend time here. she gets a job as a security guard in sicily, at la villa romana del casale. she keeps to herself. rides a motorbike to work, stands in the sun most of the day, just thinking, then bikes back to her little apartment. over time, she starts noticing a girl visiting the place quite often. round, freckled and ginger lady who could be about her age, in a hat and a flowy dress some days, dungarees other.
they start talking. reyna is reluctant at first; unsure if she can place her faith into a relationship with another person. slowly, it comes to them that they recognize each other – miranda gardiner from cabin 4. they laugh about it – funny where the fates take you.
slowly, they connect. reyna starts visiting miranda more and more. her big garden full of strawberries that she sells at the local farmer's market. they find stability in each other. and slowly, reyna learns to put her trust into someone again. and to smile.
