Kagey Art Thoughts 8:
This is actually a picture I took 4 years ago when Jasmine and I were in Italy, at the Guggenheim museum. Obviously, when I saw this lovely creature, I had to take a picture. Here’s another angle:
At first glance, it looks like a typical leonine creature with its mouth agape and a little narrow fellow around one of its legs. And that’s true, I think. But it’s interesting to me how it is covered in mysterious markings--including its face, which lacks most of the usual facial features. It even looks like it’s wearing a kind of blindfold over its eyes, though the blindfold has markings that somewhat resemble eyes. The whole thing just makes me think that this is supposed to be a legendary creature, perhaps the guardian deity of a people that comes to their aid when summoned via an ancient chant.
Otherwise I just like the way it looks. The funny little peg legs, the slim body yet large head, and the roaring mouth all appeal to me. It doesn’t look scary, but I’m not sure what emotion I do feel when I see it. It’s something kind of like amusement, maybe, mixed with a kind of pleasant calmness. Also it’s cute.
