This is my favorite painting by Christian Schad (German, 1894-1982). It's called "Halbakt" or "Half-nude" and was painted in 1929. The model was Schad's girlfriend at the time whose name was Maika. The painting is very sensual and sexy but it is also painted in a manner that is cool, detached, almost matter of fact. I think the portrait is a masterpiece of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) genre.
