Chapter 4 of Women is up now:
“A British and an American spy? What is this? The beginning of a bad joke?”
The woman stood in front of Nomi, her arms crossed, looking both her and Paloma up and down. She was an elderly woman, wearing a black hijab. Nomi and Paloma had been taken to the women’s quarter of the house. The floor of the small room was covered with rugs and pillows. In one corner of the room another woman sat on the floor with her head bowed. They had been left alone, Trevelyan staying with the men.
Nomi was surprised because the woman spoke English with just a little accent. Her words were said with a scoffing sarcasm, and Nomi raised her arms defensively.
“I’m sorry,” she began, but was immediately cut off by the woman.
“Sorry? Sorry, for coming here, giving us a whiff of freedom, of knowledge and independence, and then just leave?”
