“I thought I lost you,” Mike told Will in season four. He updated the same sentence in the van scene and said for Eleven; which means he makes the same definitions and does it without realizing it. I am 100% sure that Mike is trying to experience all his "repressed" feelings about Will through El. In psychology, this is called “the mirroring effect”. Meaning the mirror effect is our behavior reflected from others; there may be positive or negative behavior patterns, but often it means a reflection of what is within ourselves.
