Negotiations with Terrans was never easy.

Sarek had spent every day since he’d arrived on Earth being shouted at or threatened--sometimes both--while attempting to discuss some small adjustment to the tenuous treaty between the Terran Empire and Vulcan. Several supposed diplomats had made reference to the death of his own grandfather by a primitive Terran weapon, an illogical attempt to provoke him into an emotional outburst which only served to further derail negotiation attempts.

He was beginning to doubt his ability to even renew the foundational agreements of the treaty, which could easily lead to a war which Vulcan would not win or, more likely, the loss of the few rights which Vulcans still enjoyed in the Terran Empire.

One of his last slivers of hope came when one of the more open-minded diplomats had invited him to a social event, which she believed would improve relations. Terrans, she told him, find it easier to discuss important topics when they are enjoying themselves.

The social event had been what they called a gladiatorial game, a fight to the death among a Klingon and an Andorian. The Klingon had won, only to be pitted against several wild animals native to Earth. The Terran diplomat had been correct; the others were more willing to discuss renewing the treaty, and even discussing a few changes. By the time the Klingon was being mauled by a creature called a tiger, Sarek was able to excuse himself from the others to explore the arena.

“Don’t take too long,” one of the Terrans said. “I heard T’Mek is fighting today. You won’t want to miss her.”

The Terrans laughed amongst each other, but he simply bowed politely and left them. He was familiar with T’Mek. She had been a dissident against the Empire who had lost the privileges granted by the very treaty he was attempting to save. If it wasn’t signed, all Vulcans could end up like her.

It was illogical to dwell upon pessimistic thoughts. He made his way through the crowds as they watched some sort of dancing performance between battles. The tiger was wounded, growling in its cage, and the Klingon had been near death when he was dragged away by groundskeepers. Few seemed to care if he would survive.

As Sarek walked, he observed the Terrans with keen interest, even as many of them made insulting comments toward him. Perhaps he could be less conspicuous if he covered his ears and wore Terran clothing, but he wanted them to see him. He wanted them to become used to Vulcans. He wanted to them to see non-Terrans in a context in which they were not adversaries.

He found a small group of Terrans who clearly noticed him--some of them were very obviously watching him and whispering about him--but who had not shouted any insults. Perhaps it was a mistake, but he wanted to make the attempt. He approached them.

“Hello,” he said. He bowed his head slightly, his hands clasped tightly behind his back. “I wonder if I might join you in watching the next battle. As is evident, I am a stranger to your planet, and would like to gain a better understanding of your... entertainment. My hosts, while quite amicable, have given me little insight.”
