Synopsis: For the first time, Kazuya is so close to his favourite person.
He let’s out a heavy sigh, it is quite a downpour outside. The clouds are so dark if he didn’t know what time it currently is, he will definitely thought it’s already evening.
He still have three more classes, and he is hoping that by the end of it, the rain has already stopped.
With one last sigh, he turns his focus back on his teacher as the rain continues to shower the earth.
Later that day, Kazuya fights the urge to groan in dismay, the rain still hasn’t stop, and though it is not pouring as heavily as it did earlier, it is still impossible for him not to go home a little wet.
Without much of a choice, the fifth grader opens his backpack and takes out his umbrella.
He would rather not stay in school for long, some of his friends might spot him and drag him in their shenanigans.
He opens his umbrella and walks out into the rain, away from the protection that the school buildings alcove provides him from the rain.
He takes about five steps when someone runs towards him, taking shelter under his umbrella, startling Kazuya in the process.
He frowns.
Fixing his glasses and mouth opens to berate whoever it is that decides it will be fine to run into his umbrella built to fit just one kid.
If it’s Youichi or Mei, he will definitely push them away.
When he turns to his right though, he is not expecting a familiar mop of brown hair. He is expecting green or maybe blond... maybe even red, pink or black.
But definitely not brown.
Kazuya is not expecting their neighbour and fourth grader Sawamura Eijun to duck under his umbrella.
The younger boy is currently clutching the straps of his backpack tightly, with droplets of rain on his hair.
The boy looks up at him, eyes bright in that brilliant shade of gold and offering a small shy and apologetic smile.
It is obvious that he doesn’t have his umbrella with him.
Kazuya doesn’t have the heart to push him away, cheeks warm and hand getting a little clammy.
He says nothing, looking ahead of him as he continues to walk, in a much slower pace than normal so that Eijun won’t be left behind.
For the first time, Kazuya is so close to his favourite person.
Under one umbrella... the two of them, strangely, fits just right.
“The rain is not stopping...” Eijun says, eyes glued on the ground.
Kazuya nods his head, before inwardly grimacing when he realizes that Eijun is not looking at him so he lets out a small grunt. He don’t want Eijun to think that he is being ignored and that he is an ‘unapproachable kid’ just like what Mei – Eijun’s cousin – keeps on telling him.
He looks at his companion and tips his umbrella slightly to the right, making sure that Eijun’s arm will not get wet.
The younger boy smiling up brightly at him and moving a bit closer.
His hands clutching on Kazuya’s arm as he shivers a little.
Kazuya looks away, feeling his cheeks heating up more.
Kazuya could still remember the day when he first met Eijun. He is on his third grade that time, and Mei, his so called best friend introduces him to his cousin who is a transferee from a school somewhere in Nagano.
Kazuya has never met someone so bright before; not Mei with his blond hair, not Youichi with his leafy green hair, or the Kominato’s bubbly pink hair, or even Katsuyuki’s red hair.
Eijun is a different kind of bright.
He is loud, but Kazuya thinks that his loud mouth fits his bright personality perfectly.
With his beautiful golden eyes, wide toothy grin and cheerful laughter, Eijun is so bright yet warm Kazuya couldn’t help but admire him.
He is so delighted when he finds out a week after that the younger boy lives two houses ahead of him.
But they never get to interact much, not even when their mothers are together for a tea, or their fathers bonding over chess or shogi and cars.
Even at school, he rarely sees the boy, for Eijun is always surrounded by a group of children who are taken in by the brightness that he emits.
So no matter how much he wants to spend some time with the other boy, the universe, for whatever reason, just won’t permit.
And, well... yes, he does have a crush on the other boy.
A painfully embarrassing experience for him when his dearest mother finds out, and his father not helping in the slightest.
Kazuya take a glance on the boy, just an inch or so shorter than him. Wondering what thoughts are running right now in Eijun’s pretty head.
He could feel the butterflies in his tummy performing various gymnastic stunts, maybe even competing vigorously with one another.
He opens his mouth, wanting to say something... but nothing comes out.
He gulps, he really should say something.
Otherwise, Eijun will think he’s really boring.
He wants to tell the other boy how much he likes him, and maybe they can become close friends just like their parents.
Play and watch baseball together... “Uhm... Ei-kun, you know...”
“Hmm?”
“Wow...” he suddenly thinks “His eyes are really pretty... and bright and dazzling.” Kazuya once again can’t find the words to say.
For someone who has no problem talking back with mean older kids and making witty comebacks on his friends, Kazuya sure is tongue-tied when Eijun is in front of him.
He looks away and shakes his head, “Nothing,” he mumbles “Nothing at all."
Eijun tilts his head, confusion evident but he decides it’s no use insisting the other boy what he wants to say.
He clutches on his arms tightly, but not overly so, as they continue to walk back home. Kazuya’s umbrella their only shelter from the rain.
Kazuya glances at the other boy again, he’s strangely quiet, not that he minds, it’s just rare to find him not talking about random things or laughing about something.
He looks at the sky, hoping that the rain will continue to pour down.
Not wanting this rare moment to end.
Wanting to spend more time with the other boy, maybe... talk about random stuffs, like baseball... or the latest episode of Doraemon.
Maybe they can both laugh at Youichi’s unfortunate incident earlier, or Kenta accidentally swallowing an apple seed and panicking because he thought it’ll grow inside his tummy.
He can also spill about Mei getting into trouble and Masa-nii coming to bail him out of it, or about how cool Tetsu-nii and Chris-nii are.
“We’re almost home...” Eijun voices out.
Ah... the time is not on his side it seems.
And the rain... the rain is almost coming to a stop.
“Un,” is his only response. Mind and mouth still unable to cooperate.
Today is a rare chance, yet, Kazuya is unable to take advantage of it.
He wish that tomorrow, it will rain again.
And that Eijun will forget to bring umbrella again.
Maybe then, maybe they will be able to talk about a lot of things.
Maybe then he will finally be able to tell the other boy that he likes him, that he is his favourite person and wishes to be friends with him.
Kazuya let out a small sigh, it feels like the passing rain is laughing at him. Making fun of him for failing to take advantage of this rare oppurtunity to get close to the bright boy.
And as they come closer to Eijun’s house and rain stops, Kazuya wishes from the bottom of his heart that it will rain again tomorrow.
Letting go of Kazuya’s arm, Eijun smiled at Kazuya, bright and golden and warm the latter can’t look away.
“Thank you for today, Miyuki Kazuya! Laters!” He told him before ducking out of the umbrella and running the small distance to their house, leaving Kazuya looking after him.
A small smile graces Kazuya’s features, he closes his umbrella and adjusts his glasses. The butterflies in his tummy are still competing in gymnastics, his cheeks still feels warm and hands still clammy.
The spot on his right arm where Eijun have been clutching him tingles with warmth.
Tomorrow... if it rains again, and hopefully it will, Kazuya will make sure to properly communicate, so they can talk about a lot of things while walking home together in the rain, under his umbrella.

Omake
Eijun peeks through the door, watching as Kazuya walks away before softly closing the door.
Leaning on the door, he opens his backpack, staring at his yellow folding umbrella. A soft blush dusting his cheeks as a small smile blooms on his face.
“I hope it rains again tomorrow.”
He just hopes that his Mei-nii didn’t saw, or he will definitely tease him about his little crush.
“Under one umbrella
I can't honestly convey my hidden feelings
Please don't let this end
The passing rain is telling me to hurry
Love in the rain for the two who came closer”
