I have a question if I may, please. How do you think a Final Fantasy game would be received if the game was void of magic?
Do you think Square Enix would ever tread that path and make a FF game where magic did not exist in the game, and instead you only could use weapons to defeat your foes?
I find it difficult to think they would, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about and was curious about your opinion on it. Thank you.
Short answer: If you take the magic out of Final Fantasy, you basically have Parasite Eve. Good game, but it’s never going to have the wide appeal that Final Fantasy has.
Longer answer:
And I think if you take the magic out of Final Fantasy you kind of take away a huge chunk of its identity. Whether it’s in the form of crystals or materia or some kind of divine lineage (or whatever else), magic plays a huge part in the atmosphere of the games as well as the plot.
Hell, entries like FFX and XV (among others) can’t even happen if the main character can’t do magic. Multiple games have themes of cloning and human/genetic experiments and would probably take on a more sci-fi slant without magic. Some of the mild body horror elements would be more pronounced as well. And don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a crowd for that — Parasite Eve still has fans to date, after all — but it’s not going to be as appealing to a broader audience.
Also, sort of relevant to your ask: franchise creator Hironobu Sakaguchi gave an interview earlier this year and talked about what went into the decision to use “Final Fantasy”. Funnily enough, it was almost “Fighting Fantasy”.
Question. Are any of the Final Fantasy mobile games worth it? I’m on the fence and don’t want to invest time or money into any of them if not.
Anything Squeenix puts out on mobile is…. a double edged sword. At best.
Some of their mobile games can be really fun (past titles FFRK and DFFOO come to mind for me), or at the very least a nice distraction if you need something to burn time here and there. DFFOO was notable to me in particular because it had very fair drop rates for items — I had most of the weapons and armor despite never spending a dime of real money on the shitty gacha mechanic, and I was an extremely casual player.
HOWEVER COMMA
Squeenix has a massive habit of killing their mobile games pretty suddenly, typically sooner rather than later. It’s only a matter of when.
If you genuinely want to play something like Ever Crisis or Brave Exvius or whatever, then I’d suggest either keeping it casual or, if you do sink significant time into them, do so knowing End of Service can drop whenever. If you’re just interested in cutscenes/story as it relates to the the mainline games, then I’d just hit up YouTube.
Whatever you do, for the love of god don’t actually spend real money on them.
It’s a crazy-stupid idea, but imagine if Final Fantasy did a kind of multiverse idea like in Marvel. For example you’re playing as Cloud and then all of a sudden he’s falling through some portal right into Spira and Seymour breaks his fall. Or playing as Vaan killing the Judges and before he knows it he’s stuck in a classroom in Balamb Garden.
Basically a game where all the Final Fantasy games are connected through different mysterious realities and you get to play each main character traveling to these different realities.
My apologies, I know I’m not making sense, I’m just hyped for the next Dr. Strange movie and have been playing too much Final Fantasy.
Anon have you ever played any of the Dissidia Final Fantasy games, by chance?
Do you think there will ever be another theatrical release of Final Fantasy? Would you like a cgi movie or live-action? Would you prefer a new setting with new characters or something featuring returning characters from the series?
I hope to god not. Advent Children and Kingsglaive are fun enough for a first time viewing but don’t have that much rewatch quality unless you’re looking to make gifs or just want to see certain scenes for inspiration or smth. But I’d rather be waterboarded than sit through Spirits Within again.
Also no more live action video game movies society has moved past the need for live action video game movies. They’re all awful and Detective Pikachu was an anomaly, not a new standard.
Names. Fuck I am drunk...I mean SE is prone to reusing names. For examples there's I think at least one Highwimd per series and frequently Cids, along with Biggs and Wedge. I think Garland had popped up at least twice as a majority character name.

@barid-bel-medar idk why this just popped up in my inbox now, but yeah, they do. Lol. Garland is also a secondary antagonist in IX (I think) and there’s an airship named Garland in XII.
May I ask please if you know of any youtubers that cover Final Fantasy lore that you could recommend? Thank you kindly.
Like if you mean all Final Fantasies, then I think Oni Black Mage has the most consistently good recap videos. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched a lot of FF lore videos so I’m not sure if there’s a Vaatividya-type channel dedicated to Final Fantasy.
It’s also kind of weird because there are channels like Xygor that also make good FF videos, but only on certain installments — which is totally fair, but if you’re looking for a complete series, that may not be the thing you want.
