cat tax post
(she has decided the top of the sofa is a great place to claw her way along before dropping behind it so she can pounce out again; I encourage this by tossing toys at the wall for her to try and catch)
Thought I lost my cat this morning, somehow.
Usual pattern is she eats breakfast and then goes to nap on the bed, or hangout on the back porch (enclosed), or a windowsill, and then she magically reappears when it is time for me to go outside and do chores. (She has daytime access to the tightly enclosed back yard.)
Well, I got the chore stuff ready and . . . no cat. I looked into the bedroom and there was no cat napping on the rumpled quilt. I went out to the porch, and no cat there either. Hmm. That's weird.
Still no cat when I came back inside. I started searching the places she tucks herself when I've been loading suitcases. No cat. No cat there either. What the fuck what the fuck, I didn't leave a door open for her to zip out, all the window screens are in place, where the fuck is she?????
At this point I'm calling her name because sometimes that draws her out, and . . . nothing. Fuck. Where the fuck is she?????
Search more places, again. Well, maybe I missed her napping on the bed? Was there a dip in the pile she curled into? Look in there again: no black shape on top of the pale green sheets. Went into the bedroom and looked behind the heap - no cat there. Wait - there's a hint of something under the heap . . . and yes, indeed, she'd tucked herself completely under the pile of sheets and heavy quilt, and complained when I gently lifted it up.
This is a new thing, ok, the only time I've seen her put herself under blankets like that is a few times at my parents' house, but never at home.
When I was a kid, I bought one of those hanging crystal things from the local stationery store and enjoyed the rainbow patterns in my bedroom for a while. A few years ago, I finally brought it home, whereupon it languished on my dresser because I thought I didn't have a good spot to hang it.
Well about a week ago I decided it was long past time to dust off the dresser and when I picked up the crystal I decided I ought to see if perhaps it might work fine in the south window, somehow (there is a big plant rack in the way you see, and I only get good sunlight for a few hours in the morning; my childhood bedroom gets full south light all day). As of this morning it is suspended from part of the plant rack and the moving rainbow spots on the wall are either a great entertainment for the cat or perhaps a great frustration. I'm curious if she will get used to them and eventually ignore them, or if they will be a perennial source of distraction.
Tried to give my cat some treats in a fun new way, accidentally ended up betraying her most awfully.
For a while now I've put bits of her kibble, and occasional treats, inside toilet paper and paper towel tubes, with the ends crimped a bit so she has to bat them around to get the treats out. Well this morning I was tidying up and found a small paper bag and thought perhaps I could lay it on the floor with some treats in, and eventually she might realize she could reach in and paw them out? Or bat it around until they flew out, or something.
I did not realize it was -just- big enough for her to fit her head inside, until she had done so, and then could not easily back out of. She got it off before I had recovered my wits and I think I'm going to have to abandon this new toy idea.
The cat was Very Upset about something she saw on the back patio, lots of meowing in a particular upset tone, and when I found what she was yelling about - a small snake - I became very upset, because it was not a garter snake or a racer and while I do not recognize all snake species in the area, blotchy patterns make me really fucking nervous and I couldn't see the tip of its tail well enough to be sure it wasn't a young rattlesnake. It was not a baby rattler, though, but a baby gopher snake, so, phew, no crisis, and I relocated it outside of the back garden area, not that I expect it to stay put, but no one will be upset by it unless its journeys bring it back into the yard.
