I'm SO fed up of religion. My teacher is stupid and in class we don't even DO anything bro we js sit on the computers and open word documents and do random stuff like cmon.. Tests are happening this month for October half term report cards and idk what the hell she's actuslly gonna be TESTING us on for this RE test so yeah pray for me I have religion again today I think

why i think byler/queer mike wheeler will be canon

note: this is all done from memory and is over 1.6k words. i am not saying that the plot doesn't matter but im saying why would they do all of this for it to mean nothing? no hate to mileven by the way :3

Spoilers for all of Stranger Things up to s5 ep7

Area #1  -  Will coming out (s5 ep7)

A lot of people (lowk including myself..) are having byler doubt because of Will coming out. However, I don’t think it’s completely out of the question for byler to be canon based on the circumstances and what Will said. 

He wasn’t coming out because he was feeling really confident and happy in his identity, in fact you could say it was almost the opposite in a way. He came out because he was scared. Scared of what would happen if he didn’t because of Vecna, especially in the situation. I mean, he might’ve been ready but it really doesn’t seem like it under the circumstances. This makes me believe that Will still wasn’t feeling really great about himself and that’s why he dumbed down his feelings to just a ‘crush’ – because he wasn’t ready to fully commit and tell the truth, or because he still believed people would think it was weird for him to have feelings for another boy (making him think that the person he liked wasn’t gay). This could also be the reason why he says his ‘crush’ was ‘his tammy’, because he thought he could pretend that it didn’t matter to him as much as it did. 

It’s also basically confirmed for his crush to be Mike as well. In an interview from a while ago, David Harbour said that Will was really interested in someone else in the group (or something like that, can’t remember from the top of my head). Also, in the scene when he is coming out the camera pans to Mike first during some of the most important parts (‘I don’t like girls’, ‘I know they’re not like me’) which could mean nothing, but that means it could also mean something, right? Will also asks Robin about it, asking ‘how obvious’ and stuff like that. Who else would he be asking about? Who else does he know? He doesn’t have friends outside their group and he’s obviously closest with Mike. Mike also happens to very conveniently be the one to walk in on Will talking to Joyce about it in the first place. And in the van in season 4 when he’s telling Mike about the painting he talks about how Eleven will always need Mike and whatnot but it could really be perceived as him saying some of his own feelings for Mike covered up by saying it’s El. 

Area #2 - Mike part 1 (him as a character in the show)

Mike is my favourite character, but he honestly did nothing in volume 2. At least in volume 1 he was helping protect the kids, but the most he did in volume 2 was argue with Robin over music - which was actually really silly but you get the point I’m trying to make right... It makes no sense for Mike’s POV to be so covered up and hidden if he didn’t have something to hide. Not even something to hide, just something that the GA wouldn’t think about or wouldn’t really like(? I don’t know how to describe this). If Mike truly was straight and in love with El then why did he act like that around Will in Lenora? Why can’t they make it more obvious that he actually loves El? Why can’t they just give us his POV? Because there’s something we don’t know that they’re going to keep under wraps until the very last moment. 

Mike part 2 (significance)

I’ve noticed a lot of the queer/lgbtqia community feeling upset over Mike still trying to be portrayed as a straight character. The validation a lot of the community would feel if Mike really was queeris very important, especially considering how the show actually shows us real-life situations regarding minorities (e.g. Will coming out as gay and saying that he’s not different, Billy being racist) and how those people might face them. Mike eventually coming out would represent many things and would help lots of people feel valid. I don’t really know what else to say about this, it's hard to explain…

Area #3 - meanings/sets/cinematics (idk what to call this.)

There are multiple instances around Mike and closets, being a representation of being gay. First, before the Byers and El go to Lenora, El kisses Mike and tells him that she loves him, but he stands there and does nothing (pulling a very weird face for someone whose girlfriend just said that she loved you but whatever Micahel…) and behind him is an open closet. Second, in his bedroom there is a sign that says ‘ONE WAY’ and points to his closet. This closet is later on destroyed (poor Ted). Last, when Mike is telling Will that they’re ‘just friends’ or whatever in the Rink O Mania in season 4, the song ‘In the Closet’ plays. Yes, this could all just be coincidences or whatever you want to say but for things related to a closet regarding Mike in these circumstances, it’s really weird. When making sets and clothes and such for shows and movies, the designing crew do actually put effort in and a lot of things you don’t think would have significance or things you don’t think mean anything actually end up revealing a lot about a character. I mean, I don’t know about you but I don’t believe in coincidences - not anymore. /ref

The colours blue and yellow are the byler colours in case you didn’t already know and there’s SO MANY times where they’re put together, through clothes or somewhere in the background. In season 4, Mike wears a blue-ish colour shirt and Will wears a yellow-ish coloured one, and then they sit together in a really gorgeous, cinematic scene by themselves and talk? Come on. In season 5 episode 5, when the group is talking about Will killing the 3 Demos (i love u will) there's a blue blanket(?) and a yellow blanket(?) hung over the back of the chair behind Mike, and there’s a yellow lamp in front of a blue wall or something. (I can’t get images sorry…) I can’t remember where it is (might be the hospital) but the lights are literally yellow and blue too. There are more scenes like this but here are a few to prove my point, it can’t just all be incidental if it’s literally always those 2 colours?

Triangles are used for lgbtqia representation in Stranger Things as confirmed by the costume designers. In season 4, Robin can be seen wearing a shirt with triangles on it. In season 4, the blue shirt Mike wears has a triangle on the pocket over his heart. In a lot of scenes where Will is standing/sitting beside Mike, the triangle is pointing toward Will. In the scene mentioned above (which is actually the one that happens to be my banner on tumblr) the triangle is pointing towards Will again. 

In a lot of scenes that center around Will and Mike, there’s a lot of bright sunlight. For example, on the hill, Will and Mike are walking beside each other and Mike is talking about how Will is like a sorcerer and the sky changes to a warmer pinky-yellow(?) colour. This is the same for the scene I mentioned in points 3 and 4 above, the van in season 4 and a few others. The light is almost always artificial so setting the scene in that way almost has to be intentional. 

Area #4 - Robin/Vickie

Robin really helped Will understand himself and I love the 2 as a duo sm… Robin talks about ‘signals’ and about how the ‘snowball turned into an avalanche’ regarding her relationship with Vickie. Will had asked how obvious (mwtfdydgate) evidently - asking because of something that happened (MWTFDYDGATE). Will and Mike are seen with these signals - a brush of the knee, a bump of the elbow, a shared look. They can also be seen in front of a signal tower MULTIPLE TIMES and Robin looking at them together etc. There’s also so many parallels between Robin and Vickie and byler, especially considering Vickie was in a straight relationship. 

Area #5 - Will and Mike themselves

Mike treats Will differently than the rest of the core 4, but not in a bad way. He’s softer with him, and seems more genuinely worried about whether he’s injured or not. Mike will ask so many times if hes okay, more in comparison to others. For example, when will was seeing the sky spinning in s5 ep1, Mike kept contact with Will and kept asking if he was alright, but when Dustin showed up literally looking beat up as hell, Mike brushed over it a bit more (I understand the circumstances were different but you once again see the point I’m trying to make).

I had more but I’ve lost my train of thought?? I might write more another time. To wrap this up, I’d like to say that it would make ZERO sense for them to have all of these points and for them to just be coincidental. It has to mean something! I’m still doubtful about whether Will still has proper feelings for Mike and vice versa since it’s been left so long, especially around the iffy topic of mileven. If mileven weren’t together I’d have less doubt but I don’t know. I really want Mike to confess and Will to confess and it would be the cherry on top if they kissed…

Some things I hope we get in volume 3 are the painting confrontation, Mike being taken by Vecna, something about the 18 months, Mike’s pov and byler.. 

I hope they realise they like eachother in some soul crushing moment or Will sees through vecna’s eyes or something idk i need to stop….

i pray this actually reaches people/my target audience i want more than 1 note this took a while.
