The closer it gets for him to leave, Anakin feels his resolve flag in increasing amounts.
“I used to think I could save you.“ Obi-Wan tells him and the fondness in his voice almost breaks him.
Anakin doesn’t look away from the starry night sky when he answers him.
“What makes you think I want to be saved?”
Obi-Wan is quiet for a moment and he wonders if he remembers the same things he does when it’s just the two of them out here in wild space. It’s times like these that he thinks they could have fallen in love if only things had been different. That they could have stayed in love if they were anyone else.
“You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t.”
“Stay.” And it’s just one word. One word that says too little and too much all at the same time. Anakin had always said that he would never beg Obi-Wan for his love. That he would never beg him to stay, but here and now with the empty space between them he realizes he never had much of a choice. “You could stay if you want to.”
Obi-Wan smiles at him and it hurts more than anything else could. They both know he can’t stay—or maybe the fact of the matter is that he won’t stay. They could pretend for sometime that they aren’t who they are: Anakin Skywalker, Sith Lord and apprentice to the Emperor. Obi-Wan Kenobi a former Jedi Master and part of the rebellion.
“Don’t.” And he’s surprised at how soft his voice sounds, maybe it’s because he’s just as tired as Obi-Wan is. Maybe it’s because he hopes it’ll change things from the way they have to be. “Please just...don’t. Don’t say it.”
He brushes his curls back and cradles his cheek in his hand and Anakin can’t help but lean into it.
And it’s just three simple, heavy words that shouldn’t mean as much as they do. But it’s the way that Obi-Wan says them breaks his heart. He feels tears burn at the corner of his eyes as he tries to hold them back.
I loved you: I can’t be what you need.
I loved you: Please don’t doubt how much you mean to me.
I loved you: I’m sorry for what I have to do.
I loved you: You were the one who broke us.
I loved you: Even after everything you did, even after everything I did—I would’ve change anything.
I loved you: Gods help me I still love you.
He kisses him, something desperate and tender all at once. Hands leaving bruises on his hips from how tight he’s holding onto him as if he’ll slip away the moment Obi-Wan lets go. They pull back and Obi-Wan leans his forehead against his.
“I’m leaving. You can come with me or you can stay here. But if you stay Anakin, if you stay I’m not going to come look for you. I can’t do it anymore. So I’m giving you the choice: you can stay or you can come. If you don’t come I’ll accept the answer for what it is.”
He presses a kiss to his his curls before he starts to walk away.
It takes everything inside him not to beg him, not to run after him. They both made their choices and Anakin’s already made his bed now all he can do is lie in it.
He closes his eyes and feels the tears he tried to hold back start to fall with the rain.
For a moment he thinks about the life they might have had had things been different.
For a moment he lets himself imagine the life he could have with Obi-Wan. And force only knows how much he wants it. It’s so close, he’s so close and he knows that this couldn’t possibly end well. Knows that the Emperor would never stop looking for him if he ran.
He gazes after Obi-Wan’s retreating form.
He should do the same thing. Anakin knows this deep in his bones. He just needs to walk away because he never claimed to be good person. Never made any promises of being a better person, but Obi-Wan always made him want to try.
He takes a breath as the rain starts to fall harder.
He takes a step and then another. It only takes a moment, but he makes his choice.
