12. what book was the most out of your comfort zone?

Big Trouble by Dave Barry. I picked it up at the Little Free Library near my house at some point (maybe a few years ago, I don’t remember) because it had an alligator on the cover and I was intrigued by the blurb. It’s basically like if one of those cookie-cutter cop shows was a book, but like, if the plot was absolutely buckwild? Like there area about 6 things happening at all times and all of them are ridiculous. 3 of the characters seem like people Jason Mendoza (from The Good Place) might have been friends with. The book kind of seems like it’s making fun of those cop shows, but like, not the bigotry & bad stuff in them? I don’t know, but I got the impression the author might be one of those people who say they’re against “political correctness”. I don’t regret reading it, and it was entertaining in the same way those shows can be, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Also, there aren’t any alligators in it.

Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James also deserves a mention here. It’s fantasy (with a gay lead character, I think?), so it seemed like it should be smack-dab in the middle of my comfort zone (which is mostly fantasy and a little sci fi), but... it turned out it’s gritty literary fantasy with a lot of really graphic scenes (not things I like). I didn’t finish it.

25. what book do you wish you hadn’t read?

I feel like with most of the books I try and don’t like, I still take something away from the experience, so I don’t really wish I hadn’t tried them. The Thinking Woman’s Guide To Real Magic by Emily Croy Barker felt like a waste of my time, though. I don’t think it’s poorly written, and I didn’t hate it, but it’s very much not my thing. I wish I had DNFed it before the hundred page mark.

30. best guilty pleasure read of the year?

I think the only book I read this year that could be considered a guilty pleasure (or I guess technically the only 3? It’s a trilogy in one volume) is The Nine Lives of Chloe King by Liz Braswell. It’s YA fantasy from 2004 and like... would I recommend it? Probably not. Does it have some issues? Yes. But it’s a nice light read about people with cat claws and superhuman agility. I enjoyed it.

I don’t think I usually have guilty pleasure reads because I’m very much a genre fiction reader (and proud of it). I don’t really care if a book is a classic or High Art or whatever, I just care if I like it, or if it’s good by my standards. That said, I do sometimes feel guilty for liking books that I know have problematic elements to them. I feel like I should put some sort of disclaimer of “I don’t condone this aspect of this” when I talk about them (like with the Dave Barry book above).

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background:hermann does. he used to say it was a ridiculous cheesy couple thing to do, but now he’s mysteriously quiet on the subject.

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror:newt does and then hermann complains about the smudges (although the notes always make him smile, so he doesn’t tell him to stop).

Who buys the other cheesy gifts:newt buys hermann the most awful math-joke shirts he can find.

Who initiated the first kiss:i have so many first kiss scenarios for these two it’s ridiculous but if it’s like a spur-of-the-moment thing then probably newt and if it’s like they kind of slowly lean in then probably hermann.Who kisses the other awake in the morning:newt. hermann would, but he worries about newt getting enough sleep, so he doesn’t wake him up if he doesn’t have to. sometimes he’ll lie there and watch him sleeping for a little while.Who starts tickle fights:no one. hermann hates being tickled and insists he’s not responsible for injuries sustained if anyone tries.

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower:hermann. newt uses up all the hot water otherwise.Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch:they both do sometimesWho was nervous and shy on the first date:i think they both were at first, but then they figured out it wasn’t actually all that different from spending time with each other in any other situation, so the nervousness didn’t last very long.Who kills/takes out the spiders:newt screams at hermann NOT to kill the spider, and then picks it up and lets it crawl around on his arm while hermann looks quietly disgusted. herm has no problem with squishing bugs, but most of the time he gets newt to take them outside, because newt doesn’t like it when he kills them.Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk:DEFINITELY newt. although if you listen carefully, hermann also says very sappy things while drunk. just not loudly.
